The Dallas Mavericks didn’t waste time finding a replacement for longtime head coach Rick Carlisle, who left the franchise last week. According to multiple reports, the Mavs are expected to hire Hall of Famer Jason Kidd to lead the team in the 2021-22 NBA season.

Dallas is also finalizing the hire of influential Nike executive Nico Harrison as the president of basketball operations, which proved to be a deciding factor in getting Kidd to accept the job. The Los Angeles Lakers assistant is close with Harrison, and the duo believes they can work well together.

Kidd also received endorsement from Carlisle and Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki while impressing owner Mark Cuban during several conversations the two had in recent days. This prompted the 48-year-old to believe the job is his, and he already started assembling his coaching staff.

Kidd spent five seasons with the Mavericks as a player (2007-2012) and helped the franchise to win its first NBA title in the 2010-11 season. Kidd retired as a player in 2013 and immediately took the head coaching position with the Brooklyn Nets. He spent only one season at the position, leading the Nets to a conference semi-finals appearance, before deciding to become a head coach for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Kidd spent three and a half seasons with the Bucks but failed to have any significant success. He had two postseason trips, being eliminated in the first round each time, before getting fired midway through the 2017-18 season.

After taking a break from coaching, he joined Frank Vogel’s staff with the LA Lakers in 2019 and helped the franchise win an NBA title in 2019-20.

Basketball Hall of Famer Jason Kidd has been without a job ever since he was fired by the Milwaukee Bucks in January 2018. More than a year later, Kidd’s name is being linked with several college and NBA coaching jobs, and it looks like he is also ready to get back into the game.

Kidd’s name was recently mentioned as a candidate at his alma mater California, while sources told ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski that the 46-year-old is among the favorites to take over Los Angeles Lakers if the team decides to move on from Luke Walton.

When recently asked about these rumors during his appearance on ESPN’s The Jump, Jason Kidd said that he would like to get back to coaching “at any level.”

“I think Cal is a great institution. We’ll see what happens,” – said Kidd. “Right now, it’s nice to be wanted. And it just tells me I’m doing the right thing. And I think the year off helps clean up some things, too, just to refocus and have that energy.”

Discussing the Lakers’ job, Kidd said that its one of the best franchises in the world.

“Not just in the NBA, but the world,” – he added. “And so if you ever have the opportunity to wear the purple and gold, you can’t turn that down. As a coach, as a player, because they’re all about championships, and so they have a process. They have a young team. And then LeBron [James] comes and kind of sped up things. And so he wants to win now. But I think, again, it takes time.”

Jason Kidd had his coaching debut with the Brooklyn Nets in 2013–14 NBA season, managing to lead the team to East Conference semifinals in his rookie year. The following season he took over the Milwaukee Bucks with whom he spent three and a half years, but failed to make a significant playoff success which resulted in his firing. Kidd’s managerial statistics include 183 – 190 record in the regular season and 9-15 record in the playoffs.
