New York Giants are interested in former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, but not in the role you would thing. According to ESPN’s reports, Giants want Garrett to serve as an offensive coordinator under their new HC Joe Judge.

Giants surprisingly hired Judge, who previously served as New England Patriots wide receivers’ coach, as Pat Shurmur’s replacement on Tuesday. Considering Judge’s inexperience on the big stage, the organization felt that Garrett could help him turn around a team that has a 12-36 record in the last three years.

While Garrett is out as Cowboys’ HC, he is still under contract with the franchise until January 14th. This is why Giants had to ask Dallas for permission to interview him.

It is unclear how interested is Garrett into being an offensive coordinator with the Giants, especially since he just wrapped up an emotional 10-year run with the Dallas Cowboys. In those 10 years, Garrett had 85-67 record but only made the playoffs three times and failed to advance past NFC Divisional Round.

There were rumors that Dallas might offer Garrett a front office position, but it is believed that the 53-year-old is still keen to remain in coaching.

Dallas Cowboys suffered a shocking 26-15 loss to Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving Thursday but the team’s owner Jerry Jones insists there is no need for a change. Although the Cowboys have now lost three out of the last four games, after the game Jones said that he isn’t considering a coaching change.

“I’m just not going to make a coaching change,” – said Jones after being asked whether firing Jason Garrett is an option before the end of the season. “… This is not the time.”

Although Cowboys are still at the top of NFC East, they have now fallen to 6-6 record and have just a half-game lead over second-placed Philadelphia Eagles. They are still pretty much in control of their playoff destiny at this point, but it is safe to say their room for mistakes has gone. Despite this, Jones is confident his team will come through and end up competing for a Super Bowl.

“I’m looking ahead at another ballgame and I’m looking ahead at winning four or five straight and helping to write a story that they’ll talk about that you were down and out and you got it done,” – he added. “Every decision that I make over the next month will be with an eye in mind to get us in the Super Bowl now.”

Jason Garrett has been on a hot seat for some time now, given the fact that Cowboys still haven’t beaten a team with a winning record this season. Despite this, reports say that Jones will not remove him as a coach and will let him end the job this season. However, considering the fact that Garrett is out of contract in 2020, he will most certainly be out if Dallas doesn’t deliver in 2019.

Dallas Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones isn’t in a hurry to give the team’s head coach Jason Garrett a new deal. According to ESPN, Garrett, whose deal runs out after 2019, is unlikely to get a contract extension at this point.

While Garrett’s future can change depending on the team’s success next season, the belief is that the Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach in 2020 barring a Super Bowl appearance. Jones also gave this impression in a recent interview when he was asked whether the 52-year-old will get an extension.

“None of that is anything that I would talk about in this forum in any way, and so we won’t get there,” – Cowboys’ owner told 105.3 The Fan on Wednesday. “I think I’ve made clear how I feel about Jason in terms of where he is right now as far as our ability to help us win football games. I think if you look at what we’ve done over the last few years, you’ll see a pretty good winning record there. [But] it’s not enough, not enough.”

After a short stint with the Miami Dolphins, Jason Garrett joined Dallas Cowboys in 2007 as an offensive coordinator and worked his way to get the head coaching position in 2011. During his eight full seasons with the organization, Garrett led Dallas to three postseason appearances, but failed to advance past NFC Divisional Game all three times.
