Even at the age of 50, ex-Pittsburgh Penguins great Jaromir Jagr is still capable of netting goals at a professional level. On Monday, Jagr scored a goal for Czech Extraliga side Kladno Knights in a 5-4 loss to Trinec and brought his career total to 1,099. This made him the player with the most goals in hockey history, breaking the tie he previously held with legendary Wayne Gretzky.

Gretzky, who still owns the all-time NHL record, scored a combined 1,072 goals in NHL and WHA, regular season and playoffs included, on top of 26 goals at an international level for a total of 1,098. Jagr, on the other hand, has 844 goals in NHL, 200 goals in European professional leagues, and 55 goals in international tournaments.

Jaromir Jagr last played in NHL during the 2017–18 campaign, when he scored one goal and added seven assists with the Calgary Flames. He left the franchise midway through the season, returning to his native Czech Republic, and signed with Kladno, a team where he also serves as a president and part-time owner.

Since returning to Kladno, Jagr helped the team earn a promotion to Extraliga and become a mainstay in the top flight. He played a total of 109 games, contributing 68 points. The veteran has recently admitted that he is thinking about retiring from professional hockey, although he still didn’t make a firm decision.

Jaromir Jagr will remain in NHL for one more year, playing his 24th season in the league for the Calgary Flames. The Flames announced the deal on their official website and Twitter profile. Reportedly, veteran winger signed 1 year, $1 million deal.

Despite his advancing age, Jagr was one of the more desirable players in this year’s free agency. The last season he had 46 points in 82 games, and in the season before Jagr scored 66 points in 79 games. There were some rumors that Jagr could return to his native Czech Republic if he doesn’t strike a deal with an NHL team, but Flames obviously decided they could use his experience.

We watched a lot of his shifts from last year” – said the Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving. “Correction, we watched all of his shifts from last year. He still has that ability inside the blueline to hold onto pucks. His mind is at an elite level. He still makes plays.

I already said in a Czech newspaper it’s 99.9 percent that this will be my last season, so I want to get the experience to one day say I played for a Canadian team,” – said Jagr during the press conference.

Regardless of how this season pans out for Jagr and the Flames, he already left a significant mark in the NHL and is future Hall of Famer. With 1,914 points, he is the second-leading scorer in NHL history, behind Wayne Gretzky who has 2,857 points. When it comes to career games played in the league, Jagr is placed 4th with 1,711 but could pass Gordie Howe for the No.1 spot if he plays at least 57 games this season.

If I can reach it, especially with a Calgary Flames jersey on, it’s going to be special,” Jagr said regarding him potentially being the player with most career games played in NHL history.
