The Memphis Grizzlies announced on Friday that their talented big-man Jaren Jackson Jr. had surgery earlier this week to address a stress fracture in his right foot. As a result, Jackson will be sidelined for four to six months.

According to the Grizzlies, Jackson is expected to make a full recovery.

This represents some unwelcoming news for the Grizzlies, who hoped to take another step forward in 2022-23 after reaching the Conference Semifinals this past season. Jackson was a major reason why Memphis got that far in the first place, emerging as one of the best defenders in the league.

The Michigan State had his most accomplished campaign as a pro in 2021-22 after struggling to stay healthy in previous seasons. Jackson averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and league-leading 2.3 blocks per game. He also received NBA All-Defensive First Team honors.

Jackson will most certainly miss the start of the new NBA season according to the current timeline. In the worst-case scenario, he might not make the court at all before 2024. The latter seems like the most likely outcome since the Grizzlies certainly have the talent to afford to be patient with Jackson and not rush him back.

Memphis Grizzlies’ road to the playoffs this season just got a lot harder. The team confirmed on Tuesday that their starting forward Jaren Jackson Jr. suffered a torn meniscus and won’t play again in 2019/20.

According to the Grizzlies, Jackson got injured on Monday in the 109-99 loss to New Orleans Pelicans. The 20-year-old forward “experienced an unstable landing after making contact with an opposing player with contesting a shot.”

The team added that the injury won’t affect Jackson’s career and that he’s expected to make full recovery in time for the next season.

Jackson’s injury further complicates the Grizzlies situation after the NBA restart. Memphis lost all of their three games in the bubble and now have just 1.5 games lead as the eight seed. In order to make the playoffs, they will need to either get 4.5 ahead of the No.9 or face play-in series with their closest follower.

Jaren Jackson Jr, who was Grizzlies’ fourth overall pick in 2018, was enjoying a great season before the injury happened. He was not only one of the team’s best defenders but also contributed to the offense, scoring 17.4 points and grabbing 4.6 boards per game.

Since the NBA restart, Jackson was even better, pouring in more than 25 points per game.
