Choosing between signing with Dallas Cowboys and walking away from professional football, veteran tackle Jared Veldheer surprisingly chose the latter option.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Veldheer was recently approached by Dallas and was offered a one-year, $2.5 million deal. Despite the attractive offer, however, the 33-year-old veteran decided to pass and instead retired from the NFL.

This isn’t the first time that Jared Veldheer decided to end his football career. In May 2019, shortly after signing a one-year deal with New England Patriots, Veldheer announced his retirement. However, he changed his mind just several months later and returned to play two games with the Green Bay Packers.

Veldheer, who was a third-round pick in 2010, also played with Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, and Denver Broncos over the course of his NFL career.

After being rejected by Veldheer, the Cowboys are now expected to pursue other options on the free market in an attempt to add depth to their offensive line that was hit with injuries by Tyron Smith, La’el Collins, and Cameron Erving. They are reportedly now interested in veteran Ron Leary, who already played for the franchise between 2012 and 2016.

It looks like the retirement of veteran offensive tackle Jared Veldheer could last just six months. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that Veldheer will make an attempt to land a job in NFL again in the coming days.

Veldheer signed with New England Patriots back in May, but spent just one week on their roster before deciding to retire from professional football. He said at the time that his body couldn’t respond to the challenges of being a football player anymore.

However, according to reports, the 32-year-old is in shape and might get a chance to play before the 2019 season wraps up. Patriots released Veldheer from the reserve-retired list on Tuesday, clearing the way for him to sign with another team.

Jared Veldheer started his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders, who selected him in the third round of 2010 draft. After spending three years in Oakland, Veldheer embarked on a four-year-long stint with Arizona Cardinals before playing out 2018 with Denver Broncos. He played 118 games in the league, 113 of which he started.
