If MLB decides to go through with the 2020 season, New York Yankees will have pitcher James Paxton at their disposal. Paxton, who underwent back surgery back in February, recently told the media that he recovered and is again at “full strength.”

Paxton was initially ruled out for the beginning of the 2020 season but gained enough time for rehab after the league suspended its activities due to the coronavirus pandemic. He now believes that the injury is behind him and that he’ll be able to help his team if needed.

“I think I’ve thrown probably 12, 14 bullpens,” said Paxton in a recent chat with YES Network. “It’s my back feeling really good. My back is a non-issue. I feel totally healthy, so I’ll be ready to go as soon as the season comes about. … I think I’m back to full strength.”

Paxton explained that his pitches are looking good and that he’s getting back the velocity he is known for.

“I’ve seen some good results there, so I’m continuing to try and improve over this time, even though we’re not playing,” he added.

After spending his entire MLB career with Seattle Mariners, James Paxton joined the Yankees in late 2018 as part of the trade that saw prospects Justus Sheffield, Dom Thompson-Williams, and Erik Swanson head in the opposite direction. Paxton had a successful first year in New York, pitching in 29 games and finishing the season with 15-6 record alongside 3.82 ERA and 186 strikeouts.

Paxton’s MLB career stats include 56-32 record, 3.50 ERA, and 803 strikeouts.

For only the second time this postseason, a Yankees starter has gone 6 innings or more. James Paxton let up 1 run in 6 innings of hard-earned work, throwing 112 pitches, the most by any Yankees starter all season.

After the Astros took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a passed ball and a wild pitch silencing the Yankee Stadium crowd, New York responded with 4 runs in the bottom half off of Verlander. He struggled to keep his fastball down in the zone, and the Yankees took advantage by hitting 2 home runs, including a leadoff shot by DJ LeMaiheu.

Verlander settled down after the 4 run first, throwing 7 innings and striking out 9, but the damage was done, and the final score stayed 4-1. The Astros only used one reliever, so their bullpen will be well rested for what will probably be a battle of the bullpens in Game 6.

Tommy Kahnle, Zach Britton, and Aroldis Chapman combined for three shutout innings after taking over for Paxton in the 7th, a big turnaround from the bullpen meltdown in Game 4.

The Yankees and the Seattle Mariners completed the first MLB trade this offseason on Monday with a deal that will see star pitcher James Paxton head to New York in exchange for three prospects.

“I couldn’t be more excited about it,” Paxton said Monday. “It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity in New York, always expecting to win, the way I do. I’m looking forward to being a part of a fantastic team.”

Paxton, 30, was Seattle’s best batters in the past two seasons. He hit a career-high 208 batters last season with a record of 11-6 and 3.76 ERA. He also tossed the sixth no-hitter in the team’s history in a 5-0 home win against the Blue Jays.

In 2017, Paxton had a slightly better year, recording 2.98 ERA in 12-5. While health holds the pitcher back at times, the 33-year-old completes great numbers. He registered double-digit strikeouts last season, including one where he made 16 batters.

A plus with the 33-year-old is that his contract runs through 2021. His salary isn’t also a big concern. He earned just $4.9 million last year. A good negotiation will see the Yankees and the player reach a favorable agreement. Better yet, they get a player who bolsters the team’s thin rotation squad.
