Arizona Cardinals are addressing the lack of depth in their secondary. Cardinals recently took part in the 2019 NFL Supplement Draft and selected Washington State’ safety Jalen Thompson in the fifth round.

Thompson ended up being the only player taken in this year’s Supplement Draft. He was also the first player that Arizona selected this way since 1990.

According to the rules of the draft, Cardinals will now have to give up their fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. This won’t be the issue for the team, however, as they will have two fifth-rounders thanks to the Josh Rosen trade.

Jalen Thompson was forced to miss the 2019 NFL Draft due to violation of NCAA rules. He entered the Supplement Draft as the best prospect, having built a reputation of a great tackler during his three seasons with Washington State.

Thompson finished his college career with 190 tackles, 11.0 sacks, six interceptions while also adding 17 passes defended and two forced fumbles. He is expected to compete for a backup position with the Cardinals where his competition will be Budda Baker and D.J. Swearinger.
