The San Francisco 49ers announced several roster moves on Thursday including the release of wide receiver Jalen Hurd. The 2019’s third-round pick leaves the franchise after failing to play a single regular-season game as a 49er in his two and a half years as a pro.

San Francisco drafted Hurd after being impressed with his ability to successfully contribute in both the passing game and on the ground. While at college, Hurd played three seasons as a running back with Tennessee before transferring to Baylor and playing wideout there.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, they never got a chance to tap into Hurd’s potential. Before the start of the 2019 NFL season, he suffered a back injury that landed him on the injured reserve and wiped out his rookie campaign. He then tore his ACL during the training camp ahead of the 2020 season and had to spend another year on the sidelines.

Hurd failed to get on the field for the 2021 NFL campaign as well, dealing with another knee injury. He was on the injured reserve when San Francisco released him.

During his time with the franchise, Hurd did make appearances in three preseason games. During the 2019 preseason, he played two games and made three catches for 31 yards. He played one game this preseason, coming down with four receptions for 25 yards.
