The 2015’s NL Cy Young Award-winner Jake Arrieta announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. Arrieta walked away from professional baseball after 12 years in the majors, during which he played for four different franchises.

Arrieta revealed his decision during an appearance on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast.

“Well, I haven’t signed the papers, man, but I’m done. It’s time for me to step away from the game,” Arrieta said. “At some point the uniform goes to somebody else, and it’s just my time, really.”

Arrieta split the 2021 season with the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres. He largely struggled in both stops, going 5-14 with a combined 7.39 ERA and 83 strikeouts. As a result, the Padres designated him for assignment on September 21st before releasing him the day after.

The right-hander played his best baseball during his first stint with the Cubs between 2013 and 2017. On top of the Cy Young award, he also picked up an All-Star appearance, Silver Slugger Award, and pitched two no-hitters while in Chicago. Arrieta was also part of the team that won the World Series in 2016.

Jake Arrieta, who also played with the Baltimore Orioles and the Philadelphia Phillies, has an overall record of 115-93. His career stats also include 3.98 ERA and 1,433 strikeouts.

Needing some pitching help after ace Yu Darvish landed on the injured list, the San Diego Padres decided to take a chance on veteran Jake Arrieta. The 35-year-old right-hander signed a minor league deal with the Padres and has been placed on the team’s taxi squad.

Arrieta started the season with the Chicago Cubs but ended up being released after some glaring struggles at the mound. In the 20 games he started, Arrieta posted an abysmal 6.88 ERA with a 5-11 record.

Despite this, the Padres believe Arrieta’s experience could help them in their time of need.

“We need quality innings, we need pitches, we need an opportunity to win games,” said Padres manager Jayce Tingler. “With all of his experience, everything he’s done, we need some quality innings these last seven weeks, and we think he can be part of that solution.”

Jake Arrieta played his best baseball during his first stint with the Chicago Cubs between 2013 and 2017. During that time, he helped the Cubs during the World Series while earning the NL Cy Young Award and his only All-Star nod to date. Arrieta, who has a 115–89 career record with 3.89 ERA and 1,421 strikeouts, also played with the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies.

Besides losing Darvish, who is dealing with lower back tightness, San Diego is also without starting pitcher Chris Paddack for the time being. Paddack was sent to the IL with an oblique strain in late July, and it is unclear when he could return.

These injuries came at a bad time for the Padres as the team is barely hanging to the last NL wild card spot. They are currently third in the NL West with a 67-54 record and have one and a half-game more than their closest rivals, the Cincinnati Reds.

Philadelphia Phillies will likely have to continue the quest for their first World Series appearance since 2009 without pitcher Jake Arrieta. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Arrieta hinted that he might be forced to undergo a surgery on his elbow which would sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Arrieta has been diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow in early July but decided to pitch through pain for the last month. Things got worse since then, and now the surgery seems imminent.

According to Arrieta, if he decides to undergo the procedure, he won’t pitch again this season.

“I would have liked it to go differently,” – said Arrieta. “I would have liked to pitch the remainder of the season healthy, but it’s something that I really couldn’t control. The spur stayed pretty dormant for 7-8 years, and it decided to give me trouble and get to size now where this is the only option to me getting back to the pitcher that I am. And that’s OK. This is what I have to do.”

Jake Arrieta made 24 starts with the Phillies this season and has an 8-8 record with 4.64 ERA and 110 strikeouts. In the last 13 starts, however, his ERA plummeted to 5.76.

Philadelphia signed Arrieta to a three-year, $75 million deal in 2018 and it is hard to say he justified the money invested in him so far. Still, the 33-year-old was an important piece of the Phillies’ puzzle and losing him will certainly be a big blow for the team in the postseason.
