Pro Bowl pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney has finally found a place he can call home for the 2020 NFL season. After failing to get a long-term offer that would please him, Clowney decided to settle for a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.

Titans confirmed the deal on Sunday, but the team didn’t disclose the terms. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Clowney is set to earn $15 million this season.

Clowney was looking to get a big, long-term contract this offseason, but his high salary demands, last year’s injury issues, and complications due to coronavirus-inflicted financial consequences made teams reluctant to offer him one. The 27-year-old DE eventually lowered his demands, but as the offseason progressed, it became obvious that he will most likely play on a one-year contract in 2020 and enter the free agency again in 2021.

Titans were favorites to land Jadeveon Clowney all along, considering their talented squad and cap space, but New Orleans Saints reportedly made a strong push for the player in recent days. However, due to their salary limitations, the Saints were only able to offer Clowney around $13 million.

Clowney, who has three Pro Bowl appearances so far, is coming off a solid season with the Seattle Seahawks, in which he was a constant disruptive presence for opponents. Despite only managing to get 3.0 sacks and 31 tackles, he contributed in other ways and finished the year with four forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns.

With Clowney on board, Titans now have an intimidating pass rush that could further fuel their already reliable defense. This includes outside linebackers Harold Landry and Kamalei Correa, promising second-year player Derick Roberson, and offseason acquisition Vic Beasley.

One of the biggest surprises of this year’s NFL free agency is the fact that three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jadeveon Clowney still doesn’t have a team. However, this will change before the 2020 season kicks off according to the player himself.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson recently reported that she talked with Clowney about his plans for the future and that the 27-year-old defensive end told her he intends to sign a deal “before the season starts, if everything still goes on time with the season.”

Clowney also said that he has “not narrowed down a final team,” and that he’s “still open” to offers.

Jadeveon Clowney entered the free agency with hopes of landing a massive long-term contract with an expected salary of $20+ million a year. However, recent injury issues he had alongside the ongoing coronavirus pandemic narrowed down his market. Reportedly, Clowney later dropped his asking price to around $17 million a year but still failed to generate much interest.

Most recently, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks were mentioned among the favorites for Clowney’s signature. However, neither of these teams managed to get the job done in recent months.

Clowney spent 2019 with Seahawks, playing 13 games in the regular season. He finished the year with 31 tackles, 3.0 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one interception.

Free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was hoping for a big payday this offseason, but it seems like he didn’t find the kind of market he was hoping for. So, the 27-year-old Pro Bowler decided to reduce his demands.

Clowney reportedly entered the free agency with a goal to get a contract that will pay him $20 million or more in average yearly salary. Since no team was willing to go near that number so far, the sources close to the player told ESPN that he is now ready to accept between $17 million and $18 million annually.

There are several reasons why Jadeveon Clowney didn’t manage to get the offer he was hoping for. There are not too many teams on the market for a high-price defensive end this year, with several cheaper options being on the table. Also, Clowney struggled with injuries last season and wasn’t as productive as in some past years. He had 31 tackles and 3.0 sacks in 13 games with Seattle Seahawks in 2019.

According to ESPN, Tennessee Titans and Seahawks remain the front runners for Clowney’s signature. Titans haven’t been exactly efficient in disrupting the opponents’ QBs in 2019, while Seahawks want to keep Clowney as he fitted in nicely with their group when they acquired him from Houston Texans last season.

The free agency appears to be a bit different for star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Sources around the league report that Clowney isn’t currently getting the kind of offers he was expecting this offseason.

Clowney entered this year’s free agency expecting to reset the DE market with a massive contract. However, the offers he received so far were underwhelming, showing that teams are unwilling to spend big on him.

One of the reasons might be that he had a down year for his standards in 2019, while also struggling with injuries. He ended up playing 13 games with the Seattle Seahawks, contributing with 31 tackles, and 3.0 sacks, which was the lowest since his rookie year.

As Garafolo points out, this kind of situation might help Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks acquired Jadeveon Clowney last year in a trade with Houston Texans and reiterated several times that they are interested in keeping him around. However, Seahawks were reluctant to give Clowney a mega-deal he wanted, and now, there is a chance they won’t have to.

Clowney entered the league as the Texans’ first overall pick in 2014. Since then, he made three Pro Bowl appearances between 2016 and 2018, while also earning one Second-Team All-Pro selection.

While this is a worthy resume, it’s understandable that it isn’t glowing enough for teams to pay him as he was the best player in his position. One the other hand, it’s rare that players of Clowney’s caliber enter the free agency in his prime, so anything is possible.

The 2019 NFL season didn’t end the way Seattle Seahawks’ star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney hoped it would. Seattle suffered a 28-23 defeat to Green Bay Packers in Divisional Round, which prevented Clowney to make his first Super Bowl career appearance. He hopes, however, that he’ll be there next year even if it’s not in Seahawks’ jersey.

Clowney is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, and he is determined to make his decision based on his chances to win and not money. The 26-year-old told the media after the Packers’ game that his priority in free agency will be signing with the team that can get him to Super Bowl.

“I just want to win,” said Clowney. “I’m trying to get to the Super Bowl by any means. That’s what I’m looking for: Who’s going to get me there? I ain’t looking to get on no sorry team for no money. That ain’t going to fly. I ain’t gonna put my body through all of that just to lose no 16 games, go home with my check. I’d hate that, so that ain’t what I’m doing. So if I can’t win no Super Bowl, I ain’t going to no team that can’t win.”

Jadeveon Clowney has had a bit of a down year this season, managing only 3.0 sacks, but was regardless impactful for Seahawks’ defense scoring two defensive touchdowns. Seattle will definitely want to keep him around while he should attract numerous other suitors around the league as well.

Clowney, who was the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, spent the first five years of his career with Houston Texans. During that time, he had three Pro Bowl appearances and one Second-team All-Pro selection while recording 29.0 sacks.

After Clowney and Texans failed to reach a contract extension agreement, he was traded to Seahawks in exchange for Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo, and 2020’s third-round pick.

After a slow start of his stint with Seattle Seahawks, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is becoming an indispensable part of the team’s defense. Whether he will remain that in 2020, however, is yet to be seen.

Clowney, who joined Seattle in August from Houston Texans, will be a free agent after this season. And while many believe he will end up staying with the Seahawks, the 26-year-old Pro Bowler seems unwilling to commit to that just yet.

Speaking with reporters ahead of Seahawks’ Week 12 game against Philadelphia Eagles, Clowney said that he isn’t thinking about his free agency at the moment and is focused on getting to the Super Bowl.

“Right now I’m just focusing on trying to get ready to go for the Eagles,” – Clowney told reporters. “A lot of football left, and I’m really focused on this season. I don’t care about looking down the road, just one game at a time, because we can do something special here. … That’s all I’m really focused on is trying to help this team trying to find a way to get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl.”

Jadeveon Clowney was a free agent this year, but the Houston Texans decided to place a franchise tag on him after two sides were not able to agree on a long-term deal. Clowney grew unsatisfied in Houston after that and ended up being traded to Seattle.

When they acquired Clowney, Seahawks agreed not to franchise tag him again and will now need to pay him big money to keep him on the team. If not, other teams will probably be more than happy to lure him with a massive offer.

Clowney had his ups and downs this season, but it looks like he is now fully settled in Seahawks’ defense. In last three games, he managed to get 10 tackles, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one touchdown from a fumble recovery.
