Although they missed the playoffs in 2019, Indianapolis Colts remained quite competitive this season in the wake of Andrew Luck’s retirement. That was thanks to quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s solid play, who at times looked like a real franchise QB. However, Brissett was also inconsistent later in the year, which is why he isn’t a lock for a starting job in 2020.

Talking with reporters on Thursday, Colts’ general manager Chris Ballard said that “the jury’s still out” on Brissett as the team’s QB of the future.

“I think the jury’s still out, that’s why we did the short-term deal with Jacoby,” said Ballard. “Both from a standpoint of, one, to give us some security that we knew we had a player we liked and could go forward with but also, two, to see, time for us to figure out if he is the guy or not. Jacoby did a lot of good things. He also did some things I think he would tell you he needs to get better at but it’s constant evaluation.”

Ballard also added that Brissett will most likely be Indianapolis’ starting QB in Week 1 of 2020 NFL season, but didn’t rule out a possibility of looking at other options.

Jacoby Brissett entered the season as Indianapolis Colts’s backup quarterback, but got promoted when Luck suddenly retired from NFL in early August. Brissett inked a new deal with Colts shortly after, getting a two-year, $30 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Brissett looked good early in the season, leading the Colts to 5-2 record in the first seven games. He then suffered a knee injury, after which he was never the same. The 27-year-old struggled in the second part of 2019, and Indianapolis won only three out of their next nine games.

Brissett finished the year with 2,942 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns while adding 228 rushing yards and four rushing TDs.

Indianapolis Colts confirmed on Monday that their starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett is dealing with an MCL sprain. According to Colts’ head coach Frank Reich, the injury might keep Brissett from Sunday’s game against Miami Dolphins although he will make the final decision later in the week.

Brissett was injured in the second quarter of the Week 9 game against Pittsburgh Steelers when guard Quenton Nelson fell on him after a push from Steelers defense. The 26-year-old signal-caller left the game limping and didn’t return. Colts ended up losing the game 26-24.

“We’re going to have to wait until Wednesday and see how it feels,” – said Reich about Brissett’s status. “It’s one thing to come in [Monday] after the injury. I think in his mind he felt a little bit better than he expected to feel. That’s still a far cry from being able to play the game. He’s optimistic, but you have to wait until Wednesday, 48 hours to see how it responds to see if you can even start thinking about practicing and wrapping your mind around playing Sunday.”

Jacoby Brissett stepped in as Indianapolis Colts’ starter following Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement and has played surprisingly well so far. He led the Colts to 5-2 record while throwing for 1,649 yards and 14 touchdowns.

If Brissett isn’t ready to play on Sunday, veteran Brian Hoyer will assume the starting position under center. Hoyer finished the game against Pittsburgh completing 17 of 26 passes he attempted and throwing for 168 yards and three TD. He did, however, make a game-deciding mistake towards the end, throwing an interception that resulted in Steelers’  touchdown.
