Texas Rangers are doubling down on the free agency spending that they hope will get them back to relevance in MLB. Just a year after bringing in All-Star shortstop Corey Seager and All-MLB second baseman Marcus Semien, the Rangers now also landed ace Jacob deGrom.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, deGrom, who is a two-time Cy Young winner, inked a five-year deal with the Rangers. He will earn  $185 million over the course of the deal. The agreement includes a no-trade clause and a sixth-year option worth $37 million.

Jacob deGrom spent his entire career in the majors with the New York Mets. He is considered one of the best pitchers of his generation, having earned four All-Star nods and two All-MLB First Team selections on top of his Cy Young awards.

DeGrom will join the Rangers after having his worst campaign in the past five years. He made 11 starts in 2022, posting a 3.08 ERA with a career-low 102 strikeouts and a 5-4 record.

Texas Rangers probably hope that deGrom’s struggles last season were an outlier. The 34-year-old player immediately becomes their top pitcher and someone they hope will help the entire team get to the top level. Despite a huge spending spree in previous free agency, the Rangers finished the season with disappointing 68 wins.

It’s been officially more than a year since the New York Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom pitched in the MLB. However, his absence from the majors seems to be close to over after the 34-year-old player put together a couple of strong performances for Mets’ Class A affiliate St. Lucie.

DeGrom made his first rehab start last Sunday, throwing 24 pitches and striking out five out of six batters he faced. Then in his second rehab start on Friday night, he got his pitch count to 36 while throwing 29 of his pitches for strike. His fastball topped out at 101 mph.

Speaking after the game, deGrom said he “felt really good” and was happy to complete three innings.

“Coming off the first time in a game, being on a five-day routine — I felt really good,” said deGroom. “… Hopefully, I’ll keep moving forward like this and be back in the big leagues before too long.”

While deGrom’s progress must be encouraging, the Mets are not expected to rush him back on the mound. He is reportedly set to complete a few more rehab starts in the minor league before being ready for the MLB action.

Jacob deGrom had an electric start to the 2021 season, setting a record for most strikeouts in the first four starts with 40. Throughout his first 15 games, deGrom had a career-low 1.08 ERA with 146 strikeouts and a 7-2 record. Unfortunately, tightness in his elbow ruled him out midway through the campaign. He was set to return for the start of this season before a stress reaction in his shoulder prolonged his time on the sidelines.

The New York Mets are dealing with some injury uncertainty heading into the final week of “camp” after star pitcher Jacob deGrom left an intrasquad game on Tuesday night with what was described as “back discomfort.”

The three-time All-Star and two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner was only able to complete one inning of work at Citi Field on Tuesday night before he left the practice game early.

On Wednesday, it was reported that deGrom would undergo an MRI on his back that very day to determine the extent of the injury. While no diagnosis or prognosis has been offered yet, Mets manager Luis Rojas simply stated that his status is currently “day to day.”

deGrom, who was slated to face the Atlanta Braves for the Mets’ Opening Day game on July 24th, may not be able to toe the mound if he isn’t able to get back to 100% over the next ten days.

The hard-throwing Florida native has never missed significant time since establishing himself as a Mets rotation staple back in 2014, making it difficult to imagine what a New York starting rotation might look like without him.

It goes without saying that Mets fans, players, and front office personnel alike are hoping that deGrom’s injury will turn out to be minor and that he will contribute to the team’s abbreviated 2020 season sooner rather than later.

The New York Mets have to be thrilled after locking up their ace for the next five seasons.

Jacob deGrom, the winner of the 2018 NL Cy Young Award, agreed to a 5-year, $137.5 million extension with his team on Wednesday. This deal also includes a club option for a sixth year valued at $32.5 million, which could take the total value of the deal to $170 million.

The deal will keep deGrom in a Mets uniform until he is 35 years old, at the least.

DeGrom has established himself as one of the top starting pitchers in baseball in recent years. Despite being an unheralded prospect and a ninth round draft pick, his blazing fastball and sharp slider have propelled him to be one of the best strikeout artists in the game.

The 2018 season was historical for deGrom, who claimed the award as the National League’s top pitcher for the first time in his career. He dominated batters to the tune of a 1.70 ERA, striking out 269 batters in 217 innings on the mound.

DeGrom has been excellent throughout his career since debuting in 2014, holding a 55-41 record with a 2.67 ERA.

The Mets and DeGrom will remain together for the forseeable future.
