The Seattle Seahawks decided to roll with quarterback Geno Smith after their starter Russell Wilson went down with a finger injury. But the team is still looking to give themselves more options on the positions, and reportedly, one of them could be veteran Blake Bortles.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Bortles visited the Seahawks on Tuesday and worked out for the organization. The 29-year-old star has been a free agent since being released by the Green Bay Packers in July.

It remains to be seen whether Bortles parlays the workout into a deal with Seattle, but adding depth to the QB position is a priority for the franchise. With Wilson expected to miss several weeks, Smith and second-year signal-caller Jake Luton stand as their only options under center at the moment. Luton is currently on the practice squad but is expected to be promoted to the active roster for the Week 6 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Blake Bortles, third overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, is best known for leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to AFC Conference Championship in 2017. It was all downhill for him after that, and the Jags decided to cut him following a disastrous 2018 season. Since then, Bortles spent time as a backup for the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Rams.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Blake Bortles has signed with the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams announced the deal on Monday, confirming Bortles’ inked a one-year deal and will back up starting quarterback Jared Goff.

Bortles was looking for a perfect place to revive his career after Jags released him last week following a disastrous 2018 season. The 26-year-old attracted the interest from Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos as well but ended up opting for LA and the chance to work with coach Sean McVay.

“You know, kind of weighing the options that I had prior to going and meeting with anybody — this was the first visit I took — the Rams were the one that stood out to me, kind of the place I wanted to be, and what I thought would be best, personally, for me joining a good football team,” – said Bortles for the Rams’ official website. “So kind of when I was around the building talking to people, it really just solidified that. And I got off the phone with my agent and was kind of like, ‘This is where I want to be and where I think is best for me.'”

Blake Bortles entered the NFL in 2014 when the Jaguars took him third overall. In his five seasons with the team, he managed to post a 24-49 record as a starter while leading the Jags to AFC Championship game in 2017. His career stats include 59.3 percent pass completion for 17,646 yards, 103 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions.

Jacksonville Jaguars are facing lots of questions after a disastrous 2018 NFL season. The biggest question of them all, however, is the future of the team’s quarterback position. Everything points out that Jags’ current QB Blake Bortles will be released and replaced, but it looks like the team still hasn’t made a definite decision.

Tom Coughlin, Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations, recently made an appearance on ESPN’s Action Sports Jax Live! and was asked to provide an update about Bortles’ future with the team.

“Blake Bortles is the quarterback with the Jacksonville Jaguars right now,” – Coughlin responded.

This response indicates that Jaguars are taking a cautious approach about the matter. The front office is probably waiting to see the QB situation on the free agent market, as well as to get more familiar with the prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. In case that they don’t find a suitable replacement, they could hold on to Blake Bortles for one more year, considering he still has two years left on the $54 million, three-year contract he signed last offseason.

Bortles’ contract is another issue the Jags have to think about, considering the fact that they would have to swallow $16.5 million in dead money if they release him. It also makes the 26-year-old nearly impossible to move via trade.

Bortles had an impressive 2017 season, in which he led Jaguars to AFC Championship Game, but couldn’t follow that up in 2018. He only threw for 2,718 yards and 13 touchdowns last season while having 11 interceptions.

After losing seven straight games and getting eliminated from the playoff race, Jacksonville Jaguars started making some big changes. The team first fired offensive coordinator Nathanial Hackett on Monday, and then decided to bench their starting quarterback Blake Bortles in favor of Cody Kessler.

Speaking with reporters for the first time since Jags’ head coach Doug Marrone took away his starting QB job, Bortles said that he put himself in that position.

I put myself in this position,”- said Bortles. “I didn’t play good enough. I didn’t win football games. I couldn’t find a way to get it done.

By being benched for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, Blake Bortles will see his streak of starting 72 consecutive games get snapped.

When that happens, it’s a business and everybody understands that. I don’t think there’s anything personal involved. As a quarterback, I think you have one job and that’s to win a football game. And if you don’t do that, your time is probably limited.” – he added.

Always being an inconsistent quarterback, Blake Bortles particularly struggled in 2018. He managed to complete just 60 percent of his passes (223 of 36), throwing for 2,572 yards and 13 touchdowns. Bortles also threw 10 interceptions while failing to get over 200 yards passing on six occasions.

The future of Blake Bortles in Jacksonville remains unknown, although there are many indications that the team is thinking about moving on from him. Bortles still has two years left on his three-year, $54 million extension he signed in February 2018, and the Jags would have to take a massive salary cap hit if they decide to release him. It remains to be seen whether they think that wouldn’t be a big price if they could land a better quarterback.

Jacksonville Jaguars’ 31-20 win over the New England Patriots last Sunday, meant that they got their revenge for a narrow loss in the last season’s AFC Championship Game. This doesn’t mean, however, that the Jaguars are done since the team is already preparing to continue their revenge streak this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Titans established themselves as a proper anti-Jags team, and Jacksonville managed to get only one win over them in the last six seasons while losing both of the match-ups in 2017. Now the Jaguars players feel it is time for payback.

Losing to a team twice, at their house and here, that wasn’t cool,” –linebacker Myles Jack told reporters. “We’re not too happy about that. That’s obviously being talked about this week. The New England game was one thing, but this is a team that literally beat us twice in one year.

The Titans were the one team we really didn’t have an answer for,” – added safety Tashaun Gipson. “They outplayed us in every facet of the game. We were truly outmatched, from the home opener last year to the game before the playoffs. Obviously, we want to get our lick back in a sense.”

Tennessee Titans are a historically unpleasant team for Jacksonville Jaguars. Titans handed Jaguars more defeats than any other NFL team and were the ones to stop 14-2 Jags team from 1999 to reach the Super Bowl in franchise’s history. The two teams faced in the 1999 AFC Championship Game at Jacksonville and things started great for the Jaguars who had 14-10 lead at the half. Titans fired back with 23-0 run in the second half and went on to win the game.

Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a great start of the season and currently look like one of the best teams in the league. But, the match against the Titans will probably show what they are made off and whether this team is finally ready for big things.

Jacksonville Jaguars went on Wednesday and made a trade with Cleveland Browns for quarterback Cody Kessler, securing the backup for their starting QB Blake Bortles. According to the reports, the Jags sent a conditional 2019 seventh-round draft pick to the Browns in exchange for Kessler.

Cody Kessler went on to his Twitter profile after the trade was announced, and wrote that he “can’t wait to get to Jacksonville and get started.”

We are excited about the opportunity to add Cody as depth to our quarterback position,” – said Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell about team’s newest acquisition. “From our research and through getting to know Cody during the draft process, we know he is a smart, tough and competitive young man, and we expect him to be a great addition to our quarterback and offensive meeting rooms.

Jacksonville Jaguars lost their backup QB in the offseason when they made a decision not to extend Chad Henne’s contract. Henne was benched by the Jaguars in 2014 in favor of Blake Bortles and never started NFL again, playing three times as a relief in three years.

Cody Kessler was taken 93rd overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2016 NFL draft and went on to start in eight games in his rookie season due to injuries of other players. Kessler lost all of those eight games and was third-string quarterback for the team in 2017 season. With the acquisitions of Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton, alongside a strong possibility of taking a quarterback in the upcoming draft, it was only natural for Browns to move away from Kessler.

Jacksonville Jaguars decided to secure their quarterback position early. Although Blake Bortles had a one year deal left on his contract, the Jags signed him to a 3-year, $54 million deal on Saturday. According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, $26.5 million is guaranteed, while the deal could end up being worth up to $66.5 million. After Jaguars picked up his fifth-year option in May 2017, Bortles supposed to earn around $19 million in 2018.

I told Ryan [Tollner], my agent, let’s just get it done so I can just go play football. I really would love to just know and have confirmation that this is where I’m going to be, and now let’s go work and continue to build on what we did last year and go play,” – said Bortles after inking the deal. “So, happy and relieved. Obviously extremely excited. It’s a dream come true to be able to sign a second contract by the team that drafted me. That was one of my goals from the start, so excited to get it all done and get rolling now.

Although Blake Bortles didn’t have the best start to the 2017 season, he picked himself up and ended throwing for 3,687 yards and managing 21 touchdowns. He also had a passer rating higher than 60.0 for the first time in his career with 60.2.

Blake’s growth and development last season was a key to the success we had as a team,” – said the Jags executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin. “Blake has proven, with toughness and dependability, that he can be the leader this team needs going forward. Along with this contract come high expectations that he will continue to improve and help our team accomplish its ultimate goal.
