The Philadelphia Phillies will have to wait before seeing dividends of their five-year, $115.5 million mega-deal they gave catcher JT Realmuto earlier this offseason.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi revealed on Thursday that Realmuto is set to miss a month of action due to a broken thumb on his throwing hand. According to Girardi, the 29-year-old player suffered the injury while being engaged in a practice session with the bullpen a few days ago.

The injury is set to cost Realmuto a majority, if not all, of spring training, but the team hopes the All-Star will be good to go on Opening Day.

In a chat with reporters later on Thursday, Realmuto said his thumb is feeling better already and believes he could be in for a quick recovery.

“We’re obviously going to be cautious with it,” said Realmuto. “I feel pretty confident that after that two weeks, it’ll be healed because it already feels quite a bit better than it did the day that it happened.”

JT Realmuto had a slight drop-off in his production in 2020 compared to the previous two seasons but still managed to retain his place as one of the best catchers in baseball. He finished the campaign with a .266 batting average while adding 11 home runs and 32 RBIs.

At the end of the season, the player declined the Phillies’ qualifying offer and hit free agency. Still, the two sides managed to make a deal that made Realmuto the highest-paid catcher in league history with a $23.1 million annual salary.

The Philadelphia Phillies have found a way to keep All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto with the organization. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Realmuto and the Phillies came to terms on a five-year, $155.5 million contract on Tuesday.

Realmuto will make $23.1 million annually, which makes him the highest-paid catcher in the history of the league in terms of average salary. The previous record was held by the San Francisco Giants’ Buster Posey, who earns $22.1 million per year.

Realmuto previously rejected the Phillies’ qualifying offer of $18.9 million, hitting free agency while expecting a record-setting deal. The organization was initially reluctant to give him one but eventually caved when the 29-year-old star started receiving serious offers from other teams.

In the end, it worked out for both sides. Phillies won’t lose a world-class player that they paid a steep price to get while Realmuto got the money and will continue his career in familiar surroundings.

Philadelphia acquired J.T. Realmuto in 2019 in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins. The move paid off immediately, as Realmuto batted .275 while having 25 home runs and 83 RBIs. He was selected to the All-MLB First Team at the end of the season while also receiving his second consecutive All-Star nod.

In the shortened 2020 MLB season, Realmuto remained productive despite the Phillies’ collective struggles. He had a batting average of .266 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs while making the All-MLB Second Team.

NY Yankees slugger DJ LeMahieu, Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto, and Houston Astros’ outfielder George Springer have all rejected the $18.9 million qualifying offers from their respective teams, the MLB Players’ Association has announced on Wednesday. All three players will now enter free agency, joining Cincinnati Reds’ ace Trevor Bauer, who rejected his qualifying offer several days ago.

Two remaining players with qualifying offers, NY Mets’ Marcus Stroman and San Francisco Giants’ Kevin Gausman, elected to accept them and will stay with the same teams on one-year, $18.9 million contracts for the 2021 MLB season.

LeMahieu, Realmuto, and Springer’s decisions don’t come as a surprise considering the trio is set for a big payday in the free agency.

DJ LeMahieu led the MLB with a .364 batting average in the 2020 season, while hitting 10 home runs and contributing with 27 RBIs as well. He was named American League’s batting champion and was the recipient of the Silver Slugger Award.

There is a good chance that LeMahieu will remain with the Yankees, but the organization will have to dig deep into its pockets to make this happen.

But signing LeMahieu will probably be significantly less pricey than getting J.T. Realmuto. The 29-year-old catcher said on several previous occasions that he wants his new deal to shatter the record for a catcher and then some.

Realmuto’s high demands will most likely leave Philadelphia Phillies out of the race, so it highly likely that he suits up for another franchise next season. He batted .266 in 2020 for the Phillies and added 11 homers and 32 RBIs.

Finally, George Springer, who had 14 home runs in the shortened 2020 MLB season, is also knocking on the doors of a big contract. Astros remain the favorites to re-sign him, considering his importance to the team, but several other franchises, including Toronto Blue Jays, will give Houston a run for their money.

Philadelphia Phillies and All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto are nowhere close to agreeing to a new contract. This was revealed by Realmuto on Thursday in a conference call with reporters.

Realmuto is set to become a free agent after the season, and the two sides have been engaged in contract negotiations since early this year. However, the talks haven’t been fruitful then, and it appears things didn’t change much during the coronavirus pandemic break.

“We were in the really preliminary stages (of negotiations) early on in spring training before the pandemic, and we haven’t really gone anywhere since then, so if we could focus on the team here and speak a little bit less about myself that would be greatly appreciated,” said Realmuto.

Realmuto is reportedly asking to reset the market for catchers and is eyeing a contract north of $23 million. However, Phillies don’t seem ready to make such commitment if we are to judge by recent comments made by the team’s general manager Matt Klentak.

“The landscape that we left in March is different from the one we return to now. We just have to see how that manifests itself in our discussions,” Klentak told reporters last week.

J.T. Realmuto spent his early career with Miami Marlins and joined Philadelphia Phillies just ahead of last season. Realmuto ended up having an impressive first campaign in Philly, hitting .275 alongside 25 home runs and 83 RBIs.

Realmuto’s career highlights include two All-Star appearances, one All-MLB First Team selection, and two Silver Slugger Awards.

Marlins received a nice package in return, comprised of catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospect duo Will Stewart and Sixto Sanchez, and an international bonus slot.

“This is about us acquiring the best catcher in baseball, and we’re really excited about that,” – said Phillies general manager Matt Klentak.

“I think the upgrade is pretty significant,” – he added. “It’s hard to acquire top players at any position, especially at the catcher position.”

Marlins were trying to move J.T. Realmuto for the past few months and had serious talks with multiple teams including Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, and Atlanta Braves. Still, Philadelphia ended up being the most serious suitor for the services of the 27-year-old catcher and managed to present the best offer.

“We did not have to trade J.T.,” – said Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill about the trade. “But our goal is to build a long-term sustainable championship organization.”

J.T. Realmuto spent his entire career with the Miami Marlins, having made his MLB debut for the team in 2014. He batted .277 in 2018 while having career-high 21 home runs and 74 RBI.
