There has been a lot of debate in recent years on whether quarterbacks should always be the frontrunners for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. Retired Houston Texans’ legendary defensive end J.J. Watt decided to offer his take in a recent social media post, and it isn’t what you would expect.

It all started when Texans shared a breakdown of Watt’s 2014 campaign on X (former Twitter), writing that their former star should have been the MVP that year over quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Responding to the post, Watt disagreed, saying that “a QB should always win MVP.”

“The honest truth is that it’s physically impossible for any one player to be more “valuable” than the quarterback. They touch the ball every single play,” Watt wrote while adding that Rodgers fully deserved his award.

Quarterbacks have long dominated the MVP award, winning the award 25 times in the past 30 years. The other five MVP honors were given to running backs in that period. There have been only two defensive players to win the award since its inceptions, with Alan Page claiming it in 1971 and Lawrence Taylor winning one in 1986.

Also, the last 10 MVP winners were all quarterbacks. The last non-quarterback to win the award was Adrian Peterson in 2012.

Future Hall of Fame defensive end JJ Watt officially has a new team. Watt, who was a free agent after being released by the Houston Texans last month, agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

Watt broke the news himself, posting a photo of himself working out in Cardinals gear on Twitter.

The team confirmed the news shortly after in a series of tweets that included photos of Watt landing in Arizona.

“I’m excited to get started,” Watt said after arriving. “Very excited to get started, get to work, get to know the people of Arizona.”

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Watt will earn $31 million during his two-year stay with the Cardinals, and $23 million of that is guaranteed.

JJ Watt asked the Houston Texans to release him after he spent 10 years with the franchise. He said at the time that he wants to go to a team that can give him an opportunity to contend for the Super Bowl.

It is safe to say that Watt will have a tough time achieving this goal with the Cardinals. Even with him on the board, Arizona is still considered the fourth-best team in their division, with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, and LA Rams arguably being in the better position to win.

But Watt did get the money he wanted, so the deal will probably work out for him either way.

It didn’t take long for JJ Watt to generate interest in his services after being released by the Houston Texans. One of the teams interested in signing Watt is the Cleveland Browns, and it appears that the feeling is mutual.

According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, Watt is “seriously” considering the Browns as his next destination. Cabot’s sources say that the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year is attracted by the team’s talented roster and believes he would be able to play for a Super Bowl in Cleveland.

Another thing that entices JJ Watt is the Browns’ cap space. Despite putting a championship as his top priority, the 31-year-old star reportedly also wants to get paid properly.

Watt walked away from a $17.5 million salary when he agreed to part ways with the Texans last week, so he will probably ask for a salary in that range from his new team. The Browns, with $21.7 million in space, can make that happen.

Watt, a five-time Pro Bowler and five-time First-Team All-Pro selectee, has several other teams monitoring him. The Pittsburgh Steelers, where his brother TJ Watt plays, is one frequently mentioned suitor, while the Green Bay Packers are also believed to be interested.

Things don’t look all that good for Houston Texans at the moment. The franchise that won AFC South four times in the last five years is currently enjoying a disappointing 1-6 start of the 2020 NFL season, has recently fired their general manager and head coach, and is devoided of their first and second-round picks next year.

Many believe that these issues will prompt Texans to head towards a rebuild soon, which would mean a weaker roster and being out of the Super Bowl conversation. While such a scenario might benefit Texans in the long run, it would also mean that some of their main players like J.J. Watt will want to move on.

During a recent chat with reporters, Watt said that he isn’t interested in a rebuild and hinted that he might not finish the career in Houston if the organization decides to head down that path.

“I’m not looking to rebuild,” said Watt when asked whether he believes he’ll retire as a Texan. “I’m looking to go after a championship, and that’s what I want to do. So, whatever is in the best interest of the Houston Texans, that’s in the best interest of myself.”

Since being drafted by Texans in 2011, J.J. Watt emerged as one of the most disruptive forces in the NFL. He racked up 99.0 sacks in his pro career and is on pace to become the fifth-fastest player to reach 100.0 in the history of the league. Watt would most likely get to the mark even quicker if he hadn’t spent significant time on Injured Reserve since 2016.

If Houston really wants to rebuild, then trading Watt would probably be their best option to replenish their draft assets. Despite turning 31 in March and struggling with injuries lately, Watt would definitely have plenty of suitors around the league who would pay top price to get him.

The move could also work for Watt, especially if he joins a Super Bowl contender. He hasn’t advanced past Divisional Playoffs with Houston.

Houston Texans have been caught up in a big spending spree lately, having given tackle Laremy Tunsil a record-breaking deal and starting contract negotiations with quarterback Deshaun Watson. Still, Texans’ Pro Bowl defensive end J.J. Watt has no intention to use this situation to secure himself a new deal as well.

Watt currently has two years left on his contract, paying him $15.5 million and $17.5 million in 2020 and 2021, respectively, but neither of them carries any guaranteed money. And while this would be enough for most players to start making demands, Watt opted to take a different route.

“No, I don’t think that’s necessary,” Watt told Houston Chronicle in a recent chat. “I’m not going to sit here and demand anything. If I asked for an extension or money right now, I think that would be the wrong move.”

Many will agree that J.J. Watt is taking a smart approach with not rushing his extension. While Watt is one of the best defensive players in the league when he’s on the field, the fact is that he wasn’t so often on it in the past four years. After playing every game in his first five seasons in the league, he missed 32 games since 2016 while struggling with various injuries.

Watt likely wants to prove he can remain healthy and have a strong campaign in 2020, which would give him more leverage in future negotiations and allow him to land a potentially record-setting deal.

The NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team has been officially revealed on Monday, and it is hard to say there are any surprises.

The offense is led by quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, wide receivers Antonio Brown and Larry Fitzgerald, and running backs Frank Gore and Adrian Peterson among others. Brady, Peterson, tackle Joe Thomas, and guard Marshal Yanda have been selected as unanimous picks.

Defense, on the other hand, is highlighted by defensive end J.J. Watt, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, linebacker Von Miller, and cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Richard Sherman. Watt, Donald, and Miller were unanimous picks on the defensive end.

Among the special team selections were kicker Justin Tucker, who was the unanimous pick, punter Johnny Hekker, kick returner Devin Hester, and punt returner Darren Sproles. Sproles also became the fourth player in NFL history to be named in the All-Decade Team on multiple positions, as he was also selected as an offensive flex player on the offense.

New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick and Seattle Seahawks’ Pete Carroll were selected as NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team coaches.

NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team was chosen by the 48-member Hall of Fame selection committee. The eligible players were those that made it to the All-Pro team, Pro Bowl team, or Pro Football Writers of America all-conference squad in the past decade.

Patriots are the most represented team on the list, with eight players playing for the organization at some point in their career. They are trailed by Kansas City Chiefs with six selections and Seahawks with five selections.

Houston Texans are about to get a big boost for their upcoming playoff run. Their star defensive end J.J. Watt returned to practice on Tuesday and is expected to play in Texans’ first postseason game.

Watt tore his pectoral muscle in Week 8 in the game against Oakland Raiders and had surgery shortly after. He was expected to miss the remainder of the season and was placed on Injured Reserve. However, his rehab went better than expected, and Houston decided to activate him off IR in hopes he will be ready for playoffs.

“I’ll practice this week and work my way back,” Watt told reporters on Tuesday. “And obviously next week continue to practice and get ready for a playoff game. I’ll start today working my way back into practice, not going crazy with it, easing my way back in, throughout the rest of this week and then obviously next week practice leading into the first playoff game.”

J.J. Watt missed significant time in 2016 and 2017 but bounced back last season by playing all 16 games and earning a Pro Bowl nod. He was on pace to have another productive year in 2019 before going down with the injury. Watt now hopes to contribute Texan’s playoff run and help them make an impact in the postseason after a long time.

Houston Texans won the AFC South and secured the first playoff game at home by beating Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16. They play the last regular-season game against Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

It looks like Houston Texans’ star defensive end J.J. Watt hasn’t played his last game of the 2019 NFL season after all. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Watt is recovering faster than expected and might be ready in time to help Texans’ playoff run.

Watt suffered a torn pectoral in late October and was initially ruled out for the season. However, his rehab has been going exceptionally well lately, which made Houston optimistic about his return in 2019. According to reports, Texans are now holding their remaining injured reserve/designated to return spot for the 30-year-old.

Watt is expected to undergo an MRI later this month to get an idea about his progress. The player himself, however, is optimistic that he will get a positive result.

“It’s going extremely well,” –Watt recently told NBC. “I feel unbelievable. The doctors, the rehab guys are taking great care of me and I feel really, really good.”

J.J. Watt established himself as of the best pass rushers in the game since entering the league in 2011, but the injuries slowed him down in the past few years. He dealt with a number of injuries since 2016 which caused him to miss close to 30 games in the past four years.

Before going down with an injury, Watt had 24 tackles and 4.0 sacks in 2019.

Houston Texans’ defensive end J.J. Watt will once again have to watch the rest of the NFL season unfold from afar. On Monday, Watt confirmed on social media that he will have to miss the rest of the year after suffering an injury in Sunday’s game against Oakland Raiders.

This is the third time in the last four years that Watt has to end his season prematurely due to injuries.

Watt injured his shoulder in the second quarter of Raiders’ game and didn’t return to the field. He had three tackles until then.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the 30-year-old Pro Bowler suffered a torn pec, and will have to undergo surgery this week. He will be out for at least four months, but should return in time for OTAs and minicamp next year.

“This game can be beautiful, and it can also be brutal.” – Watt wrote on social media on Monday. “Absolutely gutted that I won’t be able to finish the season with my guys and give the fans what they deserve. I truly love this game and can’t stand letting you guys down. Thank you for all of the thoughts & well-wishes.”

After not missing a single game during his first five years in the league, J.J. Watt was limited to only three games in the 2016 season due to back injury. He returned from injury in time to start the 2017 NFL season, but couldn’t finish it as he suffered a leg fracture in Week 5 that sidelined him for the rest of the year.

Watt played all 16 games last season, having a productive year in which he had 61 tackles, 16.0 sacks, seven fumbles, and four passes deflected. In the eight games he played in in 2019, he had 24 tackles and 4.0 sacks.

Three times NFL Defensive Player of the Year, defensive end J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans, has suffered an injury in the Sunday night’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and will miss the rest of the season. In the first quarter of the game against the Chiefs, Watt twisted his leg and went down in pain, later being diagnosed with tibial plateau fracture. He underwent a successful surgery on Monday.

J.J. Watt was heartbroken after the injury and sent a message on Twitter.

After being elected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans with the 11th overall pick, J.J. Watt went on to become one of the league’s best defensive players. Still, in the recent years, he became injury prone. In 2015 he suffered a groin injury and fractured left hand, but managed to play all 16 games of the season. At the beginning of 2016, Watt underwent groin surgery for a sports a hernia and later a back surgery for a herniated disc. Despite recovering enough to play three games, he once again had to undergo back surgery and was ruled out for the rest of the 2016 season.

Watt wasn’t the only Texans’ player that got hurt on Sunday night. Whitney Mercilus left the game before Watt, and the test showed that he suffered torn pectoral, meaning he is ruled out for the season.

To have their seasons cut short because of an injury, it’s tough,” – the Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien said. “But, and that’s a big but, this football team understands that it is the ‘Next man up’ philosophy. The train doesn’t stop moving. The train keeps going. That’s the deal with the League. That’s what makes the NFL what it is.
