All-Star designated hitter J.D. Martinez has signed a one-year deal with the New York Mets. According to reports, Martinez will earn $12 million in base salary in 2024.

The Mets confirmed the move on their social media but didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement.

Martinez is coming off a strong campaign in 2023 in which he batted .271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBIs in 113 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He earned his third straight All-Star appearance and sixth overall.

The reason why Martinez lingered on the free agent market for so long, despite still being viewed as a menace on the plate, was his high asking price. According to multiple reports, he initially asked for a salary of around $20 million but found little interest. The San Francisco Giants were the closest to his asking price, offering $14 million in 2024, but he ended up rejecting their offer because he didn’t believe that the team’s Oracle Park is “hitter-friendly.”

The Mets reportedly were initially not interested in Martinez but ended up recognizing the opportunity to add a difference-maker once he lowered his demands.

“J.D. is a veteran Major League player with a proven track record,” Mets’ president of baseball operations David Stearns said in a statement. “His valuable bat will provide protection and extend the lineup. His addition to the club continues our commitment to compete in 2024 and beyond.”

Boston Red Sox aggressively pursued outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and third baseman Manny Machado in this offseason, but have missed out on both of them. On Tuesday, however, they finally got one deal done. According to the multiple sources, the Red Sox have reached a deal with right fielder J. D. Martinez, who was a free agent after his deal with Arizona Diamondbacks expired at the end of the season.

Reportedly, Red Sox have offered Martinez a five-year deal, worth $100 million last month, but that didn’t convince the 30-year-old who then started leaning towards an extension with the Diamondbacks. Eventually, the Red Sox increased the offer to $110 million, which ended being enough. According to ESPN, Martinez will be able to opt-out in the second and third year of the contract.

Although Boston Red Sox managed to win the American League East in 2017 with 93-69 record, they ended up having the second-lowest slugging percentage in the league with .407 and hitting just 168 home runs. This should change to better with J. D. Martinez on board.

Martinez finished the 2017 season ranking third in MLB in homers with career-high 45, hitting 29 out of those 45 in the last 62 games of the season. Mookie Betts, who was the Red Sox leader in home runs, finished the season with 24. Martinez’s performance last season wasn’t an anomaly. According to ESPN, he is the only player alongside Los Angeles Angels’ center fielder Mike Trout that managed to hit .300 with at least 125 home runs and have a slugging percentage of .550 since 2014.

Although he played as an outfielder for Diamondbacks, J. D. Martinez will most likely serve as a designated hitter for the Red Sox and finally be a badly needed successor to David Ortiz.

Detroit Tigers will enter the 2018 MLB season with a new manager. The team’s GM Al Avila announced on Friday that Tigers won’t offer a new contract to their current manager Brad Asmus. Tigers are entering rebuilding mode, trading away their star players (Justin Verlander, Justin Upton, and J.D. Martinez) and are in search for a new face to lead them through the process. The news was confirmed on the team’s official site and Twitter profile.

As we transition the ballclub in a new direction, I feel it’s best we have a new approach and a fresh start with the manager position,” said Al Avila in his statement. “Brad has done an admirable job under, at times, difficult circumstances, especially this season, and we appreciate his professionalism and dedication to the Tigers the past four years. Our search for a new manager is underway. We plan to keep an open-mind in considering current members of the coaching staff for positions in 2018, but that will be in conjunction with the manager we hire.

Brad Asmus was appointed to the managerial position in 2014 after Jim Leyland stepped down. During his 4 years in charge, Asmus won AL Central title in his first season which turned out to be the last time Tigers made the postseason. His current record is 312 wins and 325 lose.

Al and I have become very good friends over the four years I was here, so it was a little emotional when he told me he wasn’t going to bring me back,” Ausmus said. “Quite frankly, I told him I fully understood, and I told him if he had walked in and offered me a contract, I probably wouldn’t have come back because I think this team, this organization is starting over. They need a new voice.

Detroit Tigers now find themselves in the 4th position in AL Central with a 62-91 record. They are scheduled to play against Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
