The Detroit Tigers signed veteran starting pitching Ivan Nova to a one-year deal for the 2020 season, adding veteran experience to a young and unproven pitching staff.

Nova’s deal with the Tigers includes a guarantee of $1.5 million, and could reach over $2 million if he meets certain performance incentives.

This will be the Dominican righty’s fourth Major League team after previously spending time with the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago White Sox.

Once one of the top pitching prospects in the game, Nova has become a workhorse right handed pitcher, but not a star. Since making his debut in the 2010 season, he owns a 4.36 ERA in 223 Major League starts.

2019 was Nova’s only season with the White Sox, and he struggled on the South Side of Chicago. The ten-year veteran posted a 4.72 ERA in 34 starts, striking out only 5.5 batters per nine innings.

Despite his underwhelming recent seasons, the 33-year-old is a good bet for a team that is simply looking for some stability while it undergoes a painful rebuild and waits for its best pitching prospects to develop.

Nova will report to Tigers Spring Training to begin his career with the team next month.

Chicago White Sox decided to boost their rotation for the 2019 season by acquiring pitcher Ivan Nova from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates will get pitcher Yordi Rosario and international slot money in exchange.

White Sox announced the trade on Tuesday via their official social media accounts.

“It doesn’t necessarily preclude us from doing anything else with the rotation, but it was important for us to find some sort of veteran presence as we entered later in the offseason,” – said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn. “As we entered this offseason he was on the list of guys that could fit this role. This was an important get as far as stabilizing the rotation.“

Ivan Nova started his career in MLB with the New York Yankees in 2010 and played six and a half seasons there before being traded to Pittsburgh Pirates in August 2016.  He was 9-9 in 29 starts with the Pirates last season, managing 4.19 ERA and 114 strikeouts. Nova’s career stats include 78–64 record, 4.26 ERA and 840 strikeouts.

Nova’s addition might prove to be especially valuable for Chicago since they previously lost starter Michael Kopech for the upcoming season. Kopech had a Tommy John surgery in September and won’t be able to play until 2020.
