Veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas still hasn’t given up on playing in the NBA again. Thomas recently told Yahoo Sports Chris Haynes that he is “in communication” with multiple teams and looking to get back on the court.

Thomas last played with the Washington Wizards early in the 2019-20 NBA season. He was traded to the LA Clippers in February and was then waived shortly after. The 32-year-old guard failed to find a new team and decided to undergo hip surgery in hopes that he would be injury-free in 2020-21.

Thomas made 37 starts last season with the Wizards, averaging 12.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

While the injuries and inconsistency tarnished Isaiah Thomas’ reputation in recent years, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he landed a roster spot in the near future. Plenty of teams around the NBA are in need of quality depth due to the coronavirus and injuries, and Thomas might be a valuable bench piece for most of them.

Thomas had his best performances in a Boston Celtics jersey, making two All-Star appearances with the franchise. He was especially productive during 2016–17 when he was an MVP candidate and averaged 28.9 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Isaiah Thomas opted to undergo a surgery to repair his right hip and will need four months to recover. The Lakers announced that Thomas had a surgery on Thursday and confirmed the recovery time.

Isaiah Thomas has been struggling with a hip injury since the 2017 NBA Eastern Conference finals when he missed the Boston Celtics’ final two games of the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He then joined the Cavaliers in the trade that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston, but he didn’t play until January, trying to rehab his hip. After returning to the basketball court, Thomas couldn’t replicate the performance from the 2017-18 season, when he was one of the MVP candidates. The Cavs then decided to trade Thomas to the Lakers, when he showed progress but was still far from being an impactful player.

Thomas is in the final year of his contract, and it is hard to expect that there will be a team ready to give him a long-term contract. He will probably sign a one-year deal and will have to prove he can get back to his old form. The Lakers might be the team willing to offer him that short-term deal, but just in case that they are not able to get LeBron James and/or Paul George.

Although he was viewed as a disruptive teammate in the Cavaliers locker room, it looks like Thomas was on a better behavior with the Lakers. The team’s head coach Luke Walton recently even praised the 29-year-old for his attitude.

[Thomas] never complained,” – said Walton. “Every time I asked him how he was feeling, he said, ‘I feel great coach.’ Obviously, he was in some pain and had some discomfort. I didn’t know about it because he was always saying how good he felt. He really helped our team with obviously the way he can score the ball, but the things that does from a point guard position where he was constantly telling guys where to be, how to set the screen, where to set the screen, which is valuable for young players. I was very pleased with the time that he spent with us.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently playing some great basketball, which made some people forget that they are not at full capacity still. The All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas is yet to play his first basketball game for the Cavs, but that moment looks like it’s closer than ever. On Thursday, Thomas has been assigned to the Cavs’ G League affiliate Canton Charge.

Playing for Charge will give Thomas a chance to play five-on-five and experience game situations for the first time since his hip surgery. Since the Cavs’ don’t have a five-on-five play at their practices, he will be able to experience the full court run and get in game shape.

According to sources close to the Cavs, Isaiah Thomas is targeting the first week of January to make his debut for the team. The Cavaliers didn’t want to comment on these reports with head coach Tyronn Lue saying the following:

I don’t know where that came from, but I hope so. I hope it’s accurate.

Thomas, the Cavaliers front office, and the team’s medical staff will reportedly make a joint decision about his return.

The 5.9 feet point guard has aggravated his existing hip injury while playing for the Boston Celtics in the last season’s playoffs. The Celtics decided to trade Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and Brooklyn Nets 2018 first round pick for Kyrie Irving.

After being drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 NBA Draft as the 60th overall pick, Thomas has become a superstar caliber player. Thomas got the starting point guard role for the Celtics in 2015, and had two All-Star appearances, while being in the MVP conversations after averaging 28.9 points and 5.9 assists per game. There is no doubt that his return will make things even more interesting in the Eastern Conference.
