Inter Miami will enter the 2021 MLS season with a new head coach. This news comes after the team hired former England international Phil Neville for the position after parting ways with Diego Alonso earlier this month.

The move was in the making for some time now, with the reports of Neville’s arrival surfacing two weeks ago. Inter owner David Beckham reportedly identified his former Manchester United teammate as the perfect candidate for the job and was trying to lure him from the England women’s team.

Neville didn’t need much convincing at the end, stepping away as the Lionesses’ manager on Monday and taking over Inter Miami shortly after.

Miami confirmed the news on their social media, sharing an interview with Neville on Twitter.

“I have known Phil since we were both teenagers at the Manchester United academy,” said Beckham. “We share a footballing DNA having been trained by some of the best leaders in the game, and it’s those values that I have always wanted running through our club.”

Phil Neville will be tasked to improve Inter Miami’s position in the Eastern Conference standings in 2021 after the club finished 10th last season. He certainly has the players to make a jump, as Beckham and co. constructed a strong roster that is a combination of young and emerging stars with proven veterans from Europe. This includes former Juventus’ duo Blaise Matuidi and Gonzalo Higuain.

Inter Miami might enter their inaugural MLS season with a well-known name sitting on their bench. According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, former AC Milan manager, Gennaro Gattuso emerged as the favorite for Miami’s head coaching job.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Gattuso has had serious talks with Inter’s owner David Beckham in recent weeks and the two sides are close to finding an agreement. The 41-year-old manager and Beckham previously played together in 2009-10 with Milan.

These reports are in line with the information that Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas recently revealed to reporters. Mas told the media that the team is close to naming their first manager and that the selected candidate will be someone who previously both played and coached on the “highest level.”

“We’ve been looking at coaches that coached at the highest levels – they’ve been very good players in their own right.” – said Mas.

Gennaro Gattuso spent the previous two seasons as Milan’s, leading the team to sixth and fifth-place finishes in Seria A respectively. After failing to qualify for Champions League two years in a row, Gattuso decided to resign from his job.

Prior to taking over Milan, Gattuso also served as manager of Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete, and Pisa.
