The Indianapolis Colts are looking to sign veteran NFL assistant Jim Bob Cooter as their new offensive coordinator, multiple sources reported on Monday. The 38-year-old Cooter was most recently the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cooter has an existing relationship with Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen, having served as an offensive consultant for Steichen with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. Cooter’s innovativeness when it comes to offensive strategies is a major reason for the Colts’ interest in him, particularly as he displayed with the Jaguars last season and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021.

Furthermore, Indianapolis targeted Cooter due to his quarterback expertise. A former college quarterback at Tennessee, Cooter’s knowledge will be highly valuable as the Colts are reportedly looking to draft a quarterback this season. The team has the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft.

Although Cooter is expected to serve as offensive coordinator, Steichen has already made clear that he intends to make offensive calls during games. This means that Cooter would most likely be involved mostly in pre-game planning as well as possibly lead offensive meetings.

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their lengthy head coaching search on Tuesday. After reportedly interviewing 13 candidates, the franchise decided to give the job to Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.

The Colts fired head coach Frank Reich midway through the 2022 campaign after the team went 3-5-1 and struggled on the offensive side of the ball. Jeff Saturday finished the season in an interim role, winning his first game at the helm before losing the next seven.

Steichen joins the Colts after overseeing a powerful Eagles’ offense that was one of the best in the league in the previous two years. With Steichen as a play caller, Philly was the third-best scoring offense in NFL in 2022, averaging 28.1 points per contest. The 37-year-old coach previously worked with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Cleveland Browns in various roles.

The Indianapolis Colts entered the process of hiring their next head coach with an open mind, casting a wide net that saw them interview candidates with various football backgrounds. In the end, the team’s brass, with owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard zeroed in on Steichen, being impressed with his resume and the job he did with the Eagles.

Steichen’s first major task, aside from filling out his coaching staff, will be to help the Colts identify their quarterback of the future. The Colts are expected to use their fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on a signal-caller while also looking for a dependable veteran option.

After Josh McDaniels turned down the opportunity to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in favor of staying with the New England Patriots, the Colts moved swiftly and got former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich to take the job. According to reports, Reich will receive a five-year contract. This time, there won’t be backing down, since the Colts made the announcement after Frank Reich signed the contract.

We are extremely excited to announce Frank Reich as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts,” – said Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay said in a statement. “Frank has all the ingredients of a successful head coach: intelligence, innovation, character, organizational and leadership skills and a commanding presence. He also has a stellar reputation, and his myriad of life experiences and the people he has worked with make him the perfect fit for us and our fans. I feel extremely fortunate and could not be more excited for Colts Nation and the future of our franchise.

Indianapolis Colts were the first of six teams to fire their coach at the end of the regular season, but the last one to actually sign one. Team’s search for Chuck Pagano’s successor had its ups and downs, with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels agreed to the job mid-January. The Colts already announced the hiring of McDaniels and arranged a press conference. The day before the press conference, however, McDaniels informed the Colts that he will be staying with the Patriots. All the previous candidates, besides McDaniels, already took jobs elsewhere, so the team had to start all over again. They interviewed the New Orleans Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell and Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, but Frank Reich ended up getting the job.

Highlights of Reich’s career include serving as quarterbacks coach for Peyton Manning in 2009 and 2010, as well as being OC and QB coach with the San Diego Chargers.
