Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz defeated fifth-seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-2 to win the 2023 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells; his first win at the tournament. Alcaraz will return to his previous ATP world number-one ranking following the triumph.

“It means a lot to me. To recover the No. 1 [ranking] is crazy for me,” the 19-year-old stated after his win. “But especially to lift the trophy here for me means a lot… I love this tournament. I really enjoy my time here and of course, I felt the love from the people from day one. For me, it’s amazing to complete these 10 days like this.”

Having defeated Medvedev in just an hour and 10 minutes, Alcaraz got through the entire tournament without dropping a set. He also ended the 19-match and three-tournament winning streak of Medvedev, who was last defeated by Sebastian Korda in the Round of 32 of the Australian Open in January.

By winning Indian Wells, Alcaraz becomes the youngest player to win the Sunshine double – both Indian Wells and the Miami Open – as well as becoming only the second teenager ever to win three Masters 1000 events after countryman Rafael Nadal.

Iga Swiatek, the No.1 female tennis player in the world, won’t be back-to-back Indian Wells champion after all. The 21-year-old was eliminated in the semi-finals of this year’s BNP Paribas Open tournament by the reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Rybakina handled Swiatek in convincing fashion to grab a 6-2, 6-2, straight-sets win against the reigning French Open champion. She is the only one to beat Swiatek in straight sets since the Polish player assumed the top of the WTA ranking last April and the only one to do it twice this season.

Rybakina raced to a 3-0 lead to start the match before managing to fend off Swiatek’s comeback attempt at 3-2 to claim the first set. It became obvious that it was her day in the second, as she got to a 5-0 lead and just waited for Swiatek’s next slip to finish the job.

“I really played good today, so thank you so much everybody who came to watch us, it was a really nice atmosphere tonight, and yeah, come to support me on Sunday!” said Rybakina after the match.

Rybakina will now face Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells finals on Sunday for a chance to win her first WTA 1000 title. The two already played in this year’s Australian Open finals, where Sabalenka took a 4–6, 6–3, 6–4 win.

Novak Djokovic won’t be part of this year’s draw at Indian Wells. Djokovic, who was previously expected to make a run for his sixth title at the BNP Paribas Open in 2021, decided to withdraw from the tournament.

The news was officially confirmed by Indian Wells on Wednesday.

“We are disappointed that Novak will not be able to join us at the BNP Paribas Open this fall,” tournament director Tommy Haas said in a statement.

Djokovic later made the announcement of his own on Twitter, calling Indian Wells his “favorite place to go” and adding that he hopes he’ll return to the tournament in 2022.

The 2021 Indian Wells is scheduled between October 4th and October 17th after being moved from its usual March starting date. Austrian Dominic Thiem is the reigning champion, having won the tournament in 2019. The 2020 edition was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.

The loss prevented Djokovic from achieving Calendar-year Grand Slam, considering he previously won the three other major tournaments in 2021: the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Dominic Thiem surprised the tennis world by defeating Roger Federer to win the ATP Indian Wells Masters event on Sunday.

Thiem, a 25-year-old Austrian, mounted a comeback to beat Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 and win his first ATP Masters 1000 final.

Federer lost his second consecutive final at the Indian Wells event after losing to Juan Martin del Potro in 2018.

Believe it or not, with his win, Thiem takes over the 4th place rank in the men’s singles rankings. Federer falls to #5.

Thiem fought back after dropping the first set 3-6 to the Swiss tennis giant. He won the next two sets to claim the title.

Thiem, whose previous claim to fame was reaching the 2018 French Open final before losing to Rafael Nadal, garnered the first major tournament win of his career with the victory.

The Austrian will look to build on his success at the 2019 edition of the French Open which begins in late May.
