Real Madrid is plotting a comeback for their legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas. According to Spanish media reports, the club’s president Florentino Perez offered Casillas to return to the club in a non-playing role.

Casillas himself confirmed the news, although he didn’t reveal many details.

“Nothing is closed yet, but I hope that my new stage will be at Real Madrid,” said Casillas is a chat with Semana magazine. “The departure from Real Madrid was traumatic, but it’s my home.“

Casillas officially retired from professional soccer earlier this month, although he hasn’t played since suffering a heart attack in May 2019 during a training session with Porto. The 39-year-old goalkeeper spent the 2019/20 on Porto’s coaching staff while working his way to recovery.

Although Porto was interested in keeping him with the organization, it appears that Casillas wants to return to Santiago Bernabeu.

“Florentino recently called me to make an offer, and now, when I return to Madrid, we will talk,” he added.

Born in Madrid, Iker Casillas started his career in Real’s youth ranks before being handed a debut for the first team in 1999 at 18 years old. In the following 16 years, Casillas played 725 games for the club in all competitions and won 19 trophies, including five La Ligas and three UEFA Champions Leagues.

Casillas left Real in 2015 to join Porto, following rumors about his poor relationship with Florentino Perez. He went on to have four successful seasons with Portuguese giants, during which he won two Primeira Liga titles.

The soccer world was dealt a big scare on Wednesday afternoon when reports surfaced that FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas had suffered a heart attack in practice and had been rushed to the hospital.

Casillas, the former goalkeeper of Real Madrid and of the Spanish National Team, where he won the 2010 World Cup, had to have a stent put into his heart in order to clear up a blockage that caused the heart attack.

The soccer world demonstrated its solidarity, with numerous current and former players taking to social media to wish Casillas the best.

The Porto keeper took to social media after the worst of the scare had passed, saying “Everything is under control here, a big scare but I’m still holding strong. Many thanks to everyone for the messages and the affection!”

The Porto goalkeeper is one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport at his position. He won the World Cup and two European Championships as Spain’s goalkeeper.

He also won the UEFA Champions League three times with Real Madrid and has also won several individual awards for his goalkeeping.

It’s not immediately clear if Casillas will be able to continue playing soccer, but he does appear to be healthy and well after a big scare.
