Veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler has announced the end of his baseball career on Friday. Kinsler, who made four All-Star appearances during his career, called it quits after playing 14 years in the majors.

Kinsler, however, won’t walk away from baseball completely. Following his retirement, he joined San Diego Padres’ front office as an advisor to baseball operations.

The 37-year-old also spent the 2019 MLB with Padres, playing 87 games. He hit .217 with nine home runs and 22 RBIs.

“Ian had a long and distinguished career and will go down as one of the best second basemen of his generation,” – said Padres general manager A.J. Preller in a statement. “We’re excited to have him join our front office to share his passion for the game and experience as a World Series champion. His breadth of baseball knowledge will be extremely beneficial to our organization.”

After winning the World Series title with the Boston Red Sox in October, veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler decided to hit free agency and explore his options. After considering several teams in the past weeks, Kinsler now made his decision and signed with San Diego Padres according to The Athletic.

Kinsler will get a two-year deal, which is reportedly worth around $8 million. The Padres, on the other hand, will have a club option for the third year. The deal between the two sides should be confirmed after the 36-year-old undergoes a physical.

Ian Kinsler started his career in MLB with the Texas Rangers in 2006 and ended up staying eight years with the organization during which he established himself as an All-Star caliber player. Prior to 2014 MLB season, Rangers decided to trade Kinsler to Detroit Tigers, but that didn’t affect his game too much since he continued with his All-Star form and managed to win a Gold Glove Award.

In December 2017, the Tigers traded Kinsler to Los Angeles Angels, where he ended up playing 91 games and had a batting average of .239 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs. He was then traded to the Boston Red Sox in July 2018 and helped them claim the World Series glory.

Ian Kinsler’s career stats include .271 batting average, 248 home runs, 887 RBIs and 241 stolen bases.
