The Houston Texans finished their 2022 season with a 32-32 win over the Indianapolis Colts, but that was not near enough for the head coach Lovie Smith to keep his job. Just a few hours after the game wrapped up, the franchise announced that Smith was relieved of his duties.

Smith lasted only one season on the job, posting a 3-13-1 record. He spent 2021 with the Texans as well, serving as associate head coach and defensive coordinator on David Culley’s staff.

The win might have been a nice way for the Texans to finish their challenging campaign, but that will most likely not be the sentiment in the building. With the win, the Texans lost the first overall pick in the upcoming draft and will pick at No. 2. The Chicago Bears, who finished the season 3-14 will pick at No. 1.

Houston Texans’ current interim head coach Romeo Crennel might keep the job on full-basis in 2021 according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported on Sunday that there is increasing support for Crennel inside the Texans’ building and that the organization is thinking about giving him another season at the helm. Crennel, who started the season as Houston’s defensive coordinator, stepped in after the team fired Bill O’Brien.

As Rapoport points out, having Crennel as the head coach in 2021 would provide the franchise with some badly-needed stability. They could also have more time to evaluate long-term solutions and think of a strategy for the future without racing with time to fill out the position.

Romeo Crennel has been a longtime assistant in the league, getting his first NFL job in 1981 as special teams coach with NY Giants. He served with several different franchises in various roles since then, while also holding two head-coaching jobs.

Crennel has been Cleveland Browns’ head coach between 2005 and 2008, having one winning season but failing to make the playoffs. He also spent 2012 with Kansas City Chiefs, posting a 2-14 record.

After firing Bill O’Brien earlier this week, Houston Texans decided they won’t name a new permanent head coach until the end of the season. However, that didn’t stop reports about potential candidates for the job from flooding in.

One of the most intriguing ones came from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. He recently mentioned that Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels are early favorites to fill the Texans’ head coaching vacancy. Breer explained that both Swinney and McDaniels share a connection with Jack Easterby, who currently serves as the organizations’ executive vice president of football operations and interim general manager, which made them fitting candidates for the post.

According to Breer, Dabo Swinney and Easterby enjoy a “very, very strong” relationship, even if it’s considered lowkey. But the even bigger reason why Swinney is eyed by Houston is the fact that he served as the coach of Texans’ star quarterback Deshaun Watson in college.

Swinney was even asked about Houston Texans’ job opening during a press conference but refused to comment on the situation.

“I have not heard from Deshaun and that is not even anything that I want to even have to think about,” said Swinney. “That’s—you would be the one to ask that question, of all the questions. You want to ask anything about Miami?”

Josh McDaniels, on the other hand, knows Jack Easterby very well with the duo worked together for six years in New England. Also, when McDaniels was close to taking over the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, he reportedly wanted to take Easterby with him.

McDaniels was linked with a number of job openings in the past but continues to remain with the Pats. It remains to be seen whether the challenge of leading Texans will change that.
