You are probably familiar with various promos offered by NBA teams during games. Some NBA teams will hand out T-shirts, others will offer discount codes, while some will treat their fans with free food in case of certain events.

The Los Angeles Clippers have a particularly interesting promo that states all fans in the arena will get free chicken if an opposing player misses two consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter. This promo came into play during the regular-season finale against the Houston Rockets, thanks to center Boban Marjanovic.

Both the Clippers and Rockets had virtually nothing to play for as teams were locked in their places on standings. So, when Marjanovic went to the line with 4:44 left in the fourth quarter and missed his first free throw, he decided to treat the Clippers fans with some free food. He intentionally missed his second free throw, telling the crowd: “It’s on me,” and prompted huge cheers from the stands.

While some players probably wouldn’t want to do any favors to opposing fans, Marjanovic had plenty of reasons to do this for the Clippers’ fans. The 35-year-old Serbian played for parts of two seasons with the franchise, and despite appearing in only 56 games, he became a fan favorite due to his lighthearted humor and contagious energy.

The 2023 edition of the NBA Summer League wrapped up on Monday night, with the Cleveland Cavaliers being crowned the tournament’s champions. The Cavs beat the Houston Rockets 99-78 to win the tournament for the first time in franchise history.

The Cavaliers haven’t lost a single game in their Summer League championship run.

Power forward Isaiah Mobley was the biggest star of the night, scoring 28 points and adding 11 rebounds. He had help from Sam Merrill, who had 27 points on the night, and Emoni Bates, who contributed 19 points.

Mobley, who is on a two-way contract with the Cavs, was voted the MVP of the game. He was curiously left out of the tournament’s first and second-team selections.

“I try to not worry about stuff I can’t control,” Mobley said after the game. “Do I agree with it? No, but it is what it is. I’ll take the championship over it all day.”

The Rockets, on the other hand, saw a big night from Nate Hinton, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Rookie Cam Whitmore put up another strong performance, scoring 14 points. Whitmore averaged 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and three steals in the previous five games, which got him the Summer League MVP award.

The Houston Rockets didn’t waste much time in finding their new head coach after firing Stephen Silas at the end of the regular season. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Ime Udoka will serve as Silas’ replacement after agreeing to a deal with the Rockets on Monday.

The Rockets moved on from Silas after finishing the 2022-23 campaign with a 22-60 record. The team hopes Udoka can change their fortunes and kickstart the transition from a rebuilding team to a contender in the Western Conference.

Udoka previously served as a head coach with the Boston Celtics in 2021-22, leading the team to an NBA Finals appearance. He was suspended by the Celtics before this past season started for inappropriate behavior.

The suspension didn’t seem to hamper Udoka’s chances of landing a new head coaching job. He received interest from the Brooklyn Nets after they fired Steve Nash and was considered the favorite for the Toronto Raptors’ job. But Udoka was excited to work with the young Rockets team that has plenty of talent, salary cap space, and chance of landing a high pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Rockets reportedly looked into several other candidates, including ex-Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel and former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego. However, they favored Udoka all along, believing he could take command of the locker room and bring out the best of the inexperienced roster.

Considering the youth movement in Houston, it is only a matter of time before the Rockets move on from veteran guard Eric Gordon. And according to New York Post’s Marc Berman, that time might be now with the New York Knicks emerging as a strong contender to land the 32-year-old.

Berman reports that the Knicks have been internally discussing a potential trade for Gordon for a while now, viewing him as a valuable contributor who could solve their offensive problems and add reliable 3-point shooting. The New York team is having a rough start of the season, which sees them sitting at No. 12 in the Eastern Conference with a 13-16 record, and believes a player like Gordon could make an immediate impact.

The Rockets, on the other hand, wouldn’t mind getting some assets in return for Gordon. While he’s highly respected by the franchise, the Rockets are currently rebuilding and want to give their younger players a chance. Moving Gordon would open up valuable minutes and allow them to get a better look at some of their prospect. Getting draft capital or another young player is just a bonus.

If the Knicks pull off a trade for Gordon, they won’t just be a better team but will also make their point guard Derrick Rose happy. The two go way back, having played together in Amateur Athletic Union with the Mean Streets Express. Rose even tried to team up with Gordon during his first stint in New York, but Gordon chose to join the Rockets in free agency instead.

Gordon played 24 games for the Rockets this season and is currently averaging 14.7 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game.

The Houston Rockets are no closer to trading veteran guard John Wall than they were two months ago when the two sides agreed to part ways. And according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, this might result in Wall sitting out the entire 2021-22 NBA season.

Wall and the Rockets made a mutual decision in September that he won’t play for the organization anymore. Houston is rebuilding and wants to develop their young stars, while the 31-year-old isn’t interested in playing for a rebuilding team. The front office started working the phones while Wall remained around the team, training and serving as a mentor to younger players.

Wojnarowski reports that trading talks Houston had with other teams led nowhere primarily because of Wall’s big contract. The five-time All-Star is owed $44 million this season and has a $47 million option for 2022-23 that he has every intention of picking up. His health also played a part, considering that Wall played only 40 games in the past three years.

There’s always an option for Wall and the Rockets to agree to a contract buyout, but that doesn’t seem to be on the table at the moment. Wall made it clear that he doesn’t intend to engage in any buyout talks at the moment, while Houston also doesn’t seem to be keen on doing that just yet.

John Wall joined the Rockets ahead of the 2020-21 NBA campaign in a trade that saw Russell Westbrook go to the Washington Wizards. Wall ended up playing 40 games last season, averaging 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game.

Guard Armoni Brooks has turned his encouraging 2020-21 season into a multi-year deal with the Houston Rockets. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Rockets gave Brooks a four-year deal on Thursday.

Reportedly, the first year of the deal is guaranteed while the remaining three have “trigger dates.” The financial details of the agreement remained undisclosed.

After being undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft, Brooks spent time in the G League where he caught the attention of the Rockets. Houston signed him to a two-way deal in April this year, and he ended up putting surprisingly strong performances over the stretch of 20 games. The 23-year-old averaged 11.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in his first season in NBA while also shooting 38.2 percent behind the arc.

Brooks also impressed during the preseason, averaging 10.0 points in three games despite playing just 13.2 minutes per contest. He was especially lethal from deep, making nine three-pointers out of 16 attempts.

This probably made Houston realize they have a possibly hidden gem on their hands, so they moved swiftly to lock Brooks on a long-term deal. This was probably a smart decision, as he pairs well with the rest of the team’s young core and should be an important player in the rotation for the 2021-22 season.

All-Star point guard John Wall is inching closer to the end of his stint with the Houston Rockets. According to multiple reports, the two sides are currently working on finding a trade that would see Wall departing Houston in the near future.

If there’s no deal to be found when the 2021-22 NBA season tips off, Wall won’t be part of the Rockets’ lineup. He will, however, remain on the team and provide leadership to the team’s young backcourt of Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green while he’s there.

Wall arrived in Houston from the Washington Wizards ahead of the 2020-21 NBA season in a trade that saw superstar guard Russell Westbrook head in the opposite direction. Having not played since late 2018, he ended up putting together a solid campaign that saw him average 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists in 40 games.

While the past season allowed Wall to show that he still can play despite the injuries that spoiled the last four years of his career, the Rockets will have a hard time finding a taker for him. This is mostly due to the massive contract that will pay him $91.7 million in the next two years, counting the $47.4 million player option for 2022-23.

Houston reportedly wants to help Wall find a landing spot but are not ready to attach a first-round pick to do so. Also, sources close to the situation reported that the team is only willing to consider a buyout if Wall isn’t off the team by the end of the upcoming season.

The Milwaukee Bucks added a significant piece to their roster as part of their attempts to finally get out of the Eastern Conference and play in the NBA Finals. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bucks made a trade with the Houston Rockets that will land them experienced forward PJ Tucker.

The trade will see Milwaukee acquiring Tucker, forward Rodions Kurucs, and a 2022 first-round pick that the Rockets previously owned. Houston, on the other hand, will get guard DJ Augustin, power forward DJ Wilson, and the Bucks’ first-rounder in 2023.

As part of the deal, the Rockets also get the right to swap their 2021 second-rounder with Milwaukee’s first-round selection.

PJ Tucker and the Rockets agreed earlier this month that it would be in both side’s interest to part ways. Several playoff contenders showed interest in Tucker in recent weeks, but Bucks were reportedly the most aggressive in their pursuit.

Milwaukee most likely expects the 35-year-old veteran to give them a significant boost with his defensive prowess while also providing veteran leadership and valuable playoff experience.

Tucker, who also played for the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns earlier in his career, joined the Rockets ahead of the 2017-18 season. Since then, he was one of the team’s key players thanks to his ability to play multiple positions, guard the opponent’s best players, and hit threes consistently.

The Houston Rockets and DeMarcus Cousins are going their separate ways just two months into the season. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Rockets plan to release Cousins and will make the move official in the next several days.

Charania reported that the Rockets want to play a smaller lineup while also giving a chance to their younger players. This would limit the minutes for Cousins, something that both the team and the player didn’t want to see happening.

Cousins returned from an ACL tear this season, inking a one-year, $2.3 million deal with the Rockets in December. During his time in Houston, the 30-year-old former All-Star mostly played off the bench but managed to be fairly productive in that role.

In 25 games as a Rocket, Cousins averaged 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds while playing 20.2 minutes per game. His form was especially top-notch as of late, scoring in double digits in the last four games, including a 19-point effort against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Despite struggling to remain on the court in recent years, DeMarcus Cousins is expected to attract a significant interest among championship contenders. While he is long removed from his All-Star form, Cousins still can be a significant contributor in the right system and with the right workload that would minimize injury risk.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the main favorites to land Cousins at the moment, but they are expected to face competition from the Portland Trail Blazers and NY Knicks, among other teams.

The departure of superstars James Harden and Russell Westbrook has forced the Houston Rockets to rely on former All-Star guard John Wall to be their best player. And he’s delivered so far.

Despite being out of action for almost two years, Wall has been playing well in his first season with the Rockets. He’s averaging 18.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists in 2020-21 while leading the team to seven wins in the last eight games.

This has helped boost Wall’s confidence, who labeled himself as “the franchise guy” for the Rockets after a 115-103 win over Memphis Grizzlies.

“I feel like I’m the franchise guy, now that James [Harden] has left,” said Wall. “You very rarely get the opportunity to be a franchise [guy] in two different cities and two different teams. I feel like that’s my job, to be the leader of this team.”

John Wall joined the Rockets in a trade that sent Russell Westbrook to the Washington Wizards over the summer. At the time, it seemed like a bad trade for Houston, as Wall has been struggling with injuries in recent years.

After missing 41 games in 2017-18 due to a knee injury, the 30-year-old star suffered a season-ending heel injury early in 2018-19. During the recovery, he went on to rupture his Achilles and ended up being sidelined for the entire 2019-20 campaign as well.

Still, Wall is looking healthy now, and his performances are giving the Rockets a reason to be optimistic. And it’s safe to say that the franchise needs some optimism after seeing their two best players leave in less than two months.
