As predicted, Henry Cejudo’s mixed martial arts retirement in 2020 didn’t hold up. The former UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion is gearing up for a return to the octagon and has his eyes on UFC history, according to a recent interview with ESPN.

Cejudo told the media outlet that the main reason why he is ending his retirement is that he could fight Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC featherweight title. This would give him a shot to become the only UFC fighter to hold titles in three different divisions.

Unfortunately for Cejudo, the UFC has other plans, at least for the time being. They want the 35-year-old champion to fight in bantamweight before moving divisions. And the Olympic Gold medalist seems to be open to taking a long way.

“These dudes are not on my level—none of those dudes are at my level. And they all know it,” Cejudo told ESPN. “So if I have to go down to 135 pounds [and win back] my belt to challenge Alexander Volkanovski, that’s what I have to do.”

Cejudo had his last fight at UFC 240 in May 2020, when he defeated Dominick Cruz via TKO to retain UFC Bantamweight Championship. He retired immediately after the fight, leaving MMA with a 16-2 record at the time.

Former UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo could follow Conor McGregor’s footsteps and venture from MMA to boxing. In a conversation with ESPN’s Now or Never, Cejudo, who retired earlier this year, said that he would be interested in fighting up-and-coming boxer Ryan Garcia.

Cejudo would be willing to enter the boxing ring with Garcia, but also suggested a combination of MMA and boxing.

“I think Ryan Garcia would be the easiest payday ‘Triple C’ would ever get,” said Cejudo. “It would be a lot bigger than any purse I did in the UFC.”

Several weeks ago, Cejudo told reporters that he would only consider a comeback if he could fight UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Now, however, the 33-year-old sees Garcia as a more desirable opponent.

“If there’s any fight that intrigues me between staying retired, between fighting … Alexander Volkanovski or fighting … Ryan Garcia, I like the payday. Plus, it’s easy money because he’s fought nobody,” he added.

Garcia, who currently holds WBC Silver lightweight title, would also be keen to fight.

“Let’s do it over here [in boxing] first, get you some money, get you knocked out, and then I’ll go to MMA,” Garcia commented on Cejudo’s offer. “If you don’t knock me out in MMA, you’re a bum. I promise you: If you don’t submit me or do whatever you have to do, you’re trash.”

Cejudo retired from MMA with 16-2 record, and as only one of four fighters who has held two UFC titles simultaneously.

Garcia, on the other hand, is undefeated in 20 pro matches and has 17 wins by knockout.

Henry Cejudo is walking away from mixed martial arts while on top. Shortly after defending the UFC bantamweight champion title at UFC 249, Cejudo announced he is retiring from the sport.

UFC 249 saw Cejudo (16-2) making his first attempt to defend the title against Dominick Cruz (22-3). The 33-year-old American needed just two rounds to finish the job, knocking out Cruz in the second round with 0:02 seconds left on the clock.

After the match concluded, Cejudo gave a new dimension to the fight announcing it will be his last.

“I’ve done enough in the sport,” said Cejudo while announcing his retirement. “I want to walk away and enjoy myself. I’m 33 years old. I have a girl now, watching me from back home. Since I was 11, I’ve sacrificed my life to get to where I was tonight. I’m retiring tonight. Uncle Dana [UFC president Dana White], thank you. Everybody here, thank you so much.”

While the news came as a surprise to most of the MMA world, White wasn’t so shocked.

“It really didn’t shock me,” said White during his appearance on SportsCenter. “Cejudo has been talking about retirement to us for months. I’m of the belief that if you’re talking about retirement in the fight business, you should probably retire.

Henry Cejudo walks away following some impressive achievements in wrestling and MMA. After winning the Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 among numerous other medals during his freestyle wrestling career, Cejudo decided to enter the world of mixed martial arts.

Cejudo had fights with several different organizations before making his UFC debut in 2013. He won his first title in 2018, taking the UFC Flyweight Championship belt after defeating Demetrious Johnson at UFC 227.

Cejudo defended the Flyweight Championship against T.J. Dillashaw in early 2019 before knocking out Marlon Moraes at UFC 238 for vacant UFC Bantamweight Championship.
