Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen had an opportunity to get a well-paid broadcasting job after the 2019 season but turned it down in order to play one more season with the Seattle Seahawks. According to Olsen, he made this decision because he believes he still has “things to prove.”

Since making his last Pro Bowl appearance in 2016, Olsen struggled with injuries, which affected his production and ability to stay on the field. And although he had a solid season with the Carolina Panthers in 2019, racking up 52 receptions for 597 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games, the 35-year-old tight end feels that he can still add to his legacy.

“I just feel like I still have a game left, I thought I still had things to prove—both to myself and I thought I had some work to do to cement myself with my legacy as a player,” Olsen told Seahawks’ official website. “I didn’t like the way my last two years (before last year), 2017 and 2018, went, with being hurt and getting dinged up and not feeling like I was able to be myself. That was kind of a bitter pill to swallow to think that my career would end like that.”

Panthers decided to move on from Olsen after 2019 as they embark on a rebuilding process. Seattle, on the other hand, saw a proven playmaker that could add to their Super Bowl case, and the veteran quickly jumped on the opportunity.

“When the opportunity came to play out here, it was just a really unique opportunity and a really unique circumstance to come out with a winning franchise and a proven head coach and proven quarterback,” he added.

Olsen caught 718 passes during his time in Carolina and has 8,444 career receiving yards to go with 59 touchdowns. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and has two Second-team All-Pro appearances.

Veteran tight end Greg Olsen was a key player for Carolina Panthers for many years, but his time with the organization is up. The Panthers announced on Thursday that the team has parted ways with Olsen.

Olsen later said that the decision was made after a conversation he had with general manager Marty Hurney. The 34-year-old also added that he doesn’t intend to retire and will pursue new opportunities.

“The team and I are both on the same page that it is best we go in different directions for now,” said Olsen via the team’s official website. “On the field, I will always cherish the nine seasons we shared together. The wins, the losses, standing at midfield holding the Halas Trophy as NFC champs. The reality of going to the Super Bowl was beyond words, as was the disappointment of falling short.”

Olsen had one year left on his deal with Carolina and was set to account $11.6 million against the cap. Panthers reportedly offered him an extension that would bring that number down, but he rejected it.

Greg Olsen joined the Panthers in 2011 and quickly established himself as one of the team’s key players and leaders. He earned three Pro Bowl appearances and was Second-Team All-Pro two times during his stint with Carolina. However, Olsen’s production dropped in recent years as he struggled with injuries.

The departure of Olsen represents another big change for the Panthers’ organization. The team will enter 2020 with a new coach in Matt Rhule and revamped coaching staff, while All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly decided to retire at the end of the season. More changes could soon follow as the team’s quarterback situation seems unresolved in the wake of Cam Newton’s injury issues.

Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen decided he still has a desire to play football professionally. Olsen signed a two-year contract extension with the Panthers on Thursday and will remain with the team through 2020 season. The 33-year-old recently teased retirement and even considered a broadcasting career, interviewing for the Monday Night Football analyst job.

Olsen signed a three-year deal in 2015, which saw him getting $12 million signing bonus and earning $7.5 million on average per season. This two-year extension is worth $8.55 million per season according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

I’ve made it clear over the past year that I want to keep playing and I want to play here,” – said Olsen in a statement Thursday. “Both sides were very fair and worked on it in a timely manner. I feel really good about what we were able to get done both for ourselves and the team.

Originally drafted in NFL by the Chicago Bears, Greg Olsen started playing his best football after being traded to the Panthers in 2011. During his time in Carolina, Olsen has earned three Pro Bowl selections and two Second-team All-Pro honors. He has also become the first tight end in NFL history to have more than 1,000 receiving yards in three consecutive seasons (2014-2016). He didn’t have the opportunity to continue the streak since he suffered a foot injury in Week 2 of 2017 season and was limited to 7 games.

Having Greg Olsen signing the extension means that the Panthers will probably change their approach to the 2018 NFL draft where they were predicted to take a tight end.
