Atlanta United’s defensive line will be a lot more vulnerable in the reminder of 2018 MLS season. The team has announced on Wednesday that their fullback Greg Garza underwent a shoulder surgery and will take between four and six months recovering. This means that the 26-year-old U.S. international will likely be out for the remainder of the season.

The news is a major blow for United, who are currently playing very well and find themselves tied with Columbus at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Head coach of Atlanta United, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, discussed Garza’s injury with the reporters on Tuesday and said that the player will be out for “long time”, but hopes he will have him back on the roster before the end of the season.

I’m not the best person to ask, but it will be a long time,” – said Martino. “It’s a medical issue that I don’t want to get into, but it’s going to be a long time and we’re hoping that we’ll have him back before the end of the season.

Greg Garza initially suffered a shoulder injury back in August 2017, during MLS All-Star Game, but decided to try and avoid the surgery. Unfortunately, he re-aggravated the injury on May 20, during the game against New York Red Bulls, and had to undergo the surgery in order to fix the problem.

Greg Garza initially joined Atlanta United in 2016, on a one-year loan deal from Liga MX side Tijuana. After putting on some great performances, Atlanta decided to sign Garza permanently, acquiring his MLS rights from Columbus Crew SC.
