Many consider the vacant head coaching position at Green Bay Packers the most prestigious job available in the NFL at the moment. Well, former Arizona Cardinals’ coach Bruce Arians doesn’t think so.

Arians, who retired at the end of the last season, told Zach Gelb of CBS Sports Radio that he is not interested coming out of retirement to replace Mike McCarthy in Green Bay. The 66-year-old would, however, think twice about coaching the Cleveland Browns.

“No, not at all,” – said Arians when asked whether he is interested in coaching the Packers. “If I ever return to coaching it will only be in Cleveland.“

Even when Gelb pointed out that head coaching Green Bay Packers and their quarterback Aaron Rodgers is among the most desirable jobs in the league, Bruce Arians remained unconvinced.

“Yeah, it is,” – he said. “It’s just I have no desire to coach in Green Bay.”

The reason Arians would consider coaching the Browns, who also fired their coach Hue Jackson recently, is because he has fond memories of the organization when he served as their offensive coordination between 2001 and 2003.

Bruce Arians took over the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, and only had one below .500 season during his tenure with the team. He decided to retire from coaching after 2017 season wrapped up, citing his desire to spend more time with his family as the reason. Arians’ record during five seasons in Arizona is 58-33-1.

After suffering an embarrassing 17-20 loss at home from 2-9 Arizona Cardinals and losing the chance to reach the playoffs, Green Bay Packers have decided to fire their head coach Mike McCarthy. Although it is a surprise that the Packers made this decision mid-season, McCarthy was on a hot seat for some time and was expected to leave at the end of the year.

Green Bay named offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as an interim head coach. Philbin already has head coaching experience, having coached Miami Dolphins from 2012 to 2015.

The decision to fire Mike McCarthy was confirmed by Packers president Mark Murphy on Sunday night.

“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately,” – said Murphy in a statement. “Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”

Mike McCarthy joined the Green Bay Packers in 2006 and managed to lead the team to playoffs in nine out of his first 11 seasons in charge. Although Packers managed to won one Super Bowl trophy under McCarthy, the 55-year-old also missed out on several opportunities to win more titles having lost three NFC Championship games.

McCarthy has a 125–77–2 regular season record as Green Bay coach while being 10-8 in the postseason.

Green Bay Packers are set to face division rivals Detroit Lions on Sunday without their wide receiver Randall Cobb, who has been officially ruled out for the game on Friday morning. This means that Cobb, who suffered a hamstring injury during practice last week, will miss his second consecutive game.

This was an expected decision since the 28-year-old told reporters on Thursday that he isn’t 100 percent satisfied with his recovery progress.

“I think we’ve still got some progress to make before I think both sides would be comfortable,” – said Cobb. “It’s a long season, and we’re on Game 5, but at the same time, it’s a short season, and we’re on Game 5. So it’s trying to balance both of those. If something was to happen and I reinjure the same hamstring, it’s going to put me out for double the time. So it’s trying to be smart on both sides of it, which I struggle with because I play through emotion.“

In the first three games of 2018 season, Randall Cobb caught 17 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. He was particularly impressive in the comeback win against the Chicago Bears when he had had nine receptions for 142 yards.

Being without Cobb isn’t the only problem Packers are facing, since it remains unclear whether Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison, the other two of their leading three wide receivers, will be able to play.

Adams is still questionable after suffering a calf injury in practice on Wednesday, but the team is hopeful that he will make enough progress until Sunday. Allison, on the other side, is in concussion protocol but according to head coach Mike McCarthy: “there’s hope for Geronimo.”

If things don’t turn the way Green Bay Packers hope, Aaron Rodgers might be forced to three rookie receivers, out of which only fifth-round pick Marquez Valdes-Scantling has caught a pass in the NFL.

The fact that he is fully fit again makes the world of difference, and having the best NFL quarterback on their roster makes Green Bay Packers an instant contender; even without paying attention to the rest of their roster.

Then there is hunger. Everyone on the Packers is hungry for success. Aaron Rodgers is looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued season. Wide receiver Davante Adams wants to prove he is worthy of his new big contract and that he can make big plays like departed Jordy Nelson. The rest of receiving core will look to prove Rodgers wrong after he criticized them for lack of effort on practices.

Green Bay Packers’ defense will be a contributing factor as well. They finished ranked 22nd in defense in NFL last season, while their cornerbacks were among the worst in the league. Packers had issues with the secondary for years, but it might be a thing of the past.

They drafted two talented cornerbacks in the first two rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft, while also signing former Arizona Cardinals’ CB Tramon Williams in free agency. Packers also used their third-round pick to get a linebacker, selecting Vanderbilt’s Oren Burks 88th overall.

Finally, former Jets’ defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson should also contribute this year.
On paper, everything looks set for Green Bay Packers to return to playoffs this year. Super Bowl appearance is also on the table since Aaron Rodgers “is a bad man.” Now imagine if Packers’ front office decides they could use few more championship rings and trade for Khalil Mack. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
