The clash between the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers on Sunday is set to feature one extremely motivated kicker. Veteran Graham Gano, who is now playing for the Giants, badly wants to get one over his former team, and it isn’t just because they released him in 2020.

During a recent chat with The Athletic, Gano revealed that the Panthers misdiagnosed his leg injury back in 2018 and that he missed the following season because of this. The 34-year-old also hinted that he believes the wrong diagnosis also put his career in danger.

“I was told initially it was tendinitis and a bone bruise, and it was actually a lot more than that, which we knew for a while,” Gano said. “I was treating it, and I came back and had the same injury, actually worse than before.”

According to Gano, he was actually dealing with a broken femur, which caused him to miss the final four weeks of the 2018 season. He then reinjured it during training camp and had to have a season-ending procedure despite being cleared to play by the Panthers’ medical staff.

“They were telling me it was still fine,” he added. “Obviously, it was not. So I had the surgery, and it went from them telling me there was nothing wrong with my leg to I need a major surgery.”

Gano never kicked again for Carolina as the franchise released him ahead of the 2020 NFL season. He ended up signing with the Giants shortly after and has been serving as the team’s starting kicker ever since.

The New York Giants are going to have a competition for the starting kicker this offseason. According to multiple reports, the team plans to sign Pro Bowl placekicker Graham Gano to a contract at some point this week.

Gano, who was released by Carolina Panthers a couple of weeks ago, is expected to be officially presented by the Giants at some point this week. The two sides agreed to terms, and now they only wait for the 33-year-old veteran to undergo physical.

Retired placekicker Lawrence Tynes, who previously kicked for the Giants and is from Scotland like Gano, first reported the news.

Giants moved on from another Pro Bowl kicker earlier in the offseason, firing Aldrick Rosas due to his problematic off-the-field behavior. The franchise brought in veteran Chandler Catanzaro afterward, but are obviously not convinced he’s the right man for the job.

Graham Gano was a consistent performer for the major part of his career, which included stops with Panthers and Washington. He has a career conversion percentage of 82.1 on field goals while he also made 95.3 percent of extra points.

Gano, who has a Pro Bowl appearance from 2017, hasn’t kicked last year due to left leg injury. However, he is reportedly fully healthy now and ready to get back to action.

Carolina Panthers’ new regime is showing no love for the franchise veterans. According to The Athletic‘s Joseph Person, Panthers have decided to release their longtime kicker Graham Gano.

Reportedly, Panthers’ decision was motivated by finances as cutting Gano will save them $2.8 million in the salary cap.

Panthers are now expected to move forward with Joey Slye as their starting kicker. Slye filled in when Gano was out with knee injury last season, showing enough promise for the organization to give him an advantage in 2020.

Graham Gano, on the other hand, is expected to have no issues landing another job at some point in the season as proven veteran kickers are always in demand. That is, of course, if he shows he’s healthy again. 

Gano joined Panthers’ in 2012, and has since played 98 games with the franchise. During that time, he made 85.5 percent of his field-goal attempts while boosting a 95.0 percent extra point conversion rate. 

Before coming to Carolina, Gano, who has one career Pro Bowl appearance, also played with United Football League and Washington.

Carolina Panthers’ veteran kicker Graham Gano won’t be doing any kicking in 2019 after all. Panthers announced on Friday that they have placed Gano on the injured list and haven’t included them in their 53-man roster, which effectively ruled him out for the season.

Gano suffered an injury to his plant leg late in 2018, which caused him to miss the last four games of the season. Initially, Panthers were optimistic that he will return this summer and the 32-year-old even did some kicking during the training camp. Unfortunately, this is when he started experiencing soreness issues and had to be shut down.

“Both Graham and the team were optimistic throughout this process that his leg would improve enough to allow him to kick,” – general manager Marty Hurney said via Panthers’ official website. “Unfortunately, Graham still had pain in his plant leg each time he tried to resume kicking. These are tough decisions, and we discussed all options, but ultimately we decided to place Graham on injured reserve today.”

Graham Gano signed with the Panthers in 2012, after being released by the Washington Redskins. During his time with the franchise, Gano brought continuity to the Panthers on the position while establishing himself as one of the most accurate kickers in the league.

Gano has been especially efficient in the past couple of seasons, managing to convert 92.1 percent of field goals he attempted. He also made good on 91.4 of his extra-point attempts.

With Gano out for the season, Carolina is now expected to turn to undrafted rookie Joey Slye. The 23-year-old scored on seven out of eight field-goal attempts during the preseason which included an impressive 59-yarder in the game against Pittsburgh Steelers.
