Slovenian point guard Goran Dragic, one of the most intriguing available free agents on his position this offseason, will run it back with Miami Heat.

Dragic, who played a big role in Heat’s trip to the NBA Finals last season, announced on Twitter that he agreed to a new deal with the franchise. Reportedly, the contract is at two-years and comes with $20 million in value.

“Happy to be back,” Dragic told the Associated Press of the deal. “That was my plan, to come back, but in this crazy business you never know.”

Goran Dragic is coming off an eventful 2019/20 campaign that saw him lose the Heat’s starting point guard job to third-year player Kendrick Nun during the regular season while also being the second-best scorer for the team in the playoffs.

After getting back his starting job to start the playoffs due to Nun’s conditioning, Dragic went on to produce his best postseason run in which he averaged 19.1 points per game while adding 4.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists. He could have arguably made an even bigger impact, but the left foot injury forced him to sit out most of the NBA Finals series against the L.A. Lakers.

Getting Dragic back represents a great piece of business for the Miami Heat, who’s confident they can embark on another deep playoff run in 2020/21. The Heat will have most of the NBA Finals roster back, with Myers Leonard also re-signing recently, while also having more than $10 million in cap space to add another impactful player down the line.

Miami Heat didn’t have much luck with injuries this season, which led to their fall outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. Things could change now, however, since their starting point guard Goran Dragic and forward Derrick Jones Jr. are finally returning to the rotation.

Dragic only played 14 games this season, was only featured in two of Miami’s last 41 games. He was out since December when he underwent a knee surgery.

Jones Jr. was out since January 27th, when he suffered knee bruises in the game against the New York Knicks. The 22-year-old originally supposed to sit out several more weeks, but managed to recover earlier than expected.

“They will both be available,” – said Heat’s coach Erik Spoelstra on Wednesday. “However, I still think they need a little more work, and we’ll be at home after that and think we’ll be able to continue to progress with the work they’ve had. But at least they’ve made this big step. They’ve taken this step forward, and they’ll be with us.”

Goran Dragic, who earned his first All-Star selection last year, is currently averaging 15.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

Derrick Jones Jr., who played 37 games this season, is averaging 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Miami Heat will have to look for a way to climb up the Eastern Conference standings without their starting point guard Goran Dragic. The team announced on Wednesday that the 32-year-old Slovenian had an arthroscopic surgery to deal with a lingering right knee injury.

Dragic previously missed 12 out of Heat’s previous 14 games trying to deal with the issue with rest and treatment. After that didn’t work out, he decided to undergo surgery.

He managed to play 14 games this season, averaging 15.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

Miami’s head coach Erik Spoelstra said he is glad that Goran Dragic will resolve the issues with his knee.

Goran is as dedicated as anybody. He was getting treatment around the clock and it just wasn’t responding the way he wanted to,” – said Spoelstra. “We feel good about the fact that there’s a solution now … This solution is the most promising. We will deal with it and he will be back this season.”

After stints with Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, Goran Dragic joined Miami Heat in 2015 and managed to establish himself as the team’s leading playmaker right away. He was particularly impressive in the last couple of season, which resulted in an All-Star appearance in 2018.

Dragic also had success on an international level, managing to get a win EuroBasket 2017 with Slovenia, after which he retired from the national team.
