MLS officially has its next big star with Inter Miami announcing on Friday that they have finalized the signing of striker Gonzalo Higuain.

It was reported that Higuain is Inter-bound several weeks ago, but the move was slowed by the fact that the 32-year-old Argentinian had one more year left on his deal with Juventus. The two sides managed to agree to a contract termination in recent days, which cleared the way for a veteran to come to the United States.

Higuain will sign a Designated Player contract in Miami and will play alongside his former Juve teammate Blaise Matuidi. His brother, Frederico Higuain, also plays in MLS with D.C. United.

“First of all, I want to thank Inter Miami for the effort it has made to sign me,” said Higuain in a statement. “I think it will be a beautiful experience in my life. It’s what I was looking for—a new experience, a new league, and a beautiful city. I’m really happy to be here and that it’s official. My goal is to try to transmit all the experience I acquired in Europe and to help the team grow.”

The capture of Higuain will be a major boost for the ambitious Inter Miami side that saw some growing pains during its inaugural season in MLS. They are currently sitting dead last on Eastern Conference standings with just two wins and seven losses in 11 games.

Inter Miami appears to be on the verge of adding its second former Juventus star of the summer transfer window, as the fledgling MLS club is nearing a deal for striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Higuain, a regular with Argentina’s national team from 2009 to 2018, has been looking for a new home ever since new Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo told him that he was not in the team’s plans for the upcoming season.

The former Real Madrid and Napoli striker played in 40 matches between Serie A and the Champions League last season, contributing 10 goals and 4 assists at the age of 32.

Higuain has scored a total of 306 goals in 640 league and cup experience over his long and successful career.

Inter Miami, owned by soccer legend David Beckham, has already splurged on Higuain’s former teammate Blaise Matuidi this summer. Adding Higuain would add another world-famous star with a Champions League pedigree to a league that has been spending quite some time looking to attract top talent.

Higuain would join his older brother Federico, a forward for DC United, in MLS if the deal is finalized.

However, according to Higuain’s compatriot and Galaxy boss Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the 32-year-old striker will probably choose native Argentina over Major League Soccer.
