MLS officially has its next big star with Inter Miami announcing on Friday that they have finalized the signing of striker Gonzalo Higuain.

It was reported that Higuain is Inter-bound several weeks ago, but the move was slowed by the fact that the 32-year-old Argentinian had one more year left on his deal with Juventus. The two sides managed to agree to a contract termination in recent days, which cleared the way for a veteran to come to the United States.

Higuain will sign a Designated Player contract in Miami and will play alongside his former Juve teammate Blaise Matuidi. His brother, Frederico Higuain, also plays in MLS with D.C. United.

“First of all, I want to thank Inter Miami for the effort it has made to sign me,” said Higuain in a statement. “I think it will be a beautiful experience in my life. It’s what I was looking for—a new experience, a new league, and a beautiful city. I’m really happy to be here and that it’s official. My goal is to try to transmit all the experience I acquired in Europe and to help the team grow.”

The capture of Higuain will be a major boost for the ambitious Inter Miami side that saw some growing pains during its inaugural season in MLS. They are currently sitting dead last on Eastern Conference standings with just two wins and seven losses in 11 games.

Gonzalo Higuain is a prolific striker, who played for some of the biggest European clubs in the past, including Real Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus, and scored more than 300 goals on the club level. He has also been a member of the Argentina national team between 2009 and 2018.

Juventus’ star Gonzalo Higuain has been heavily linked with a move to MLS in recent months, with Los Angeles Galaxy mentioned as one of the favorites for his signature. However, according to Higuain’s compatriot and Galaxy boss Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the 32-year-old striker will probably choose native Argentina over Major League Soccer.

Higuain found himself out of favor at Juve on the past two seasons and is approaching the end of his contract. It is believed that the Italian giants are ready to let him go this summer, which put on notice several MLS teams.

In a recent chat with Gazzetta Dello Sport, Schelotto admitted that Galaxy is one of those teams, although they are not overly optimistic about a possible deal.

“Who wouldn’t want him? I would, but it’s difficult,” said Schelotto. “He could still remain at Juventus, but if he leaves, I think he would choose with his heart. I think he will return to River Plate.”

Gonzalo Higuain spent his youth career with River Plate and played three seasons professionally with the club. He made 41 appearances and scored 15 goals between 2004 and 2007, before departing to join La Liga giants Real Madrid. Higuain now reportedly wants to return home and try to win a title with River; something he wasn’t able to do during his first stint.

Higuain made 33 appearances with Juventus in all competitions this season, scoring only eight goals.
