The league sources have revealed to ESPN that Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant will opt-out of his contract this summer and become an unrestricted agent. Durant signed a two-year contract with the team in the summer, which had player option clause for the 2018-19 season.

This, however, doesn’t mean that the 2017 NBA Finals MVP will look at other offers. Durant will reconstruct his deal with the Warriors, which saw him getting paid a lot less than he is worth. The 29-year-old accepted approximately $26 million per year, which is $10 million less than he would earn with a max-salary contract.

Thanks to this kind of approach from Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors were able to retain some of their key bench players on the roster like point guard Shaun Livingston and forward Andre Iguodala.

His gesture of taking less gave us the ability to be very aggressive in pursuing Shaun and Andre,” – explained Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers in July. “I can pretty much unequivocally say, without it, we’re not looking at the team we have right now. What Kevin did shows who he is, shows what he’s about, and I think it’s clear that that’s winning. Without him doing that it would have been a different roster, and clearly to me, a roster that wasn’t as good as the one we have right now.

Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2016 in a widely controversial move. It turned out to be a good decision for Durant, since he won the NBA Championship in his first season with the team, and was also named the NBA Finals MVP. This season Durant is averaging 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.8 blocks per game.

Golden State Warriors are currently without their four All-Star players, but one could return soon. According to the team’s statement from Tuesday, guard Stephen Curry, who missed the team’s last six games, is “making good progress and, as a result, has been cleared to participate in full team practice beginning tomorrow, with the goal of returning to play later this week.”

Stephen Curry suffered a sprained ankle injury during the game against the San Antonio Spurs on March 8. Warriors are being cautious over Curry’s return since this was his fourth ankle injury this season. The 30-year-old also has a history of ankle injuries, which at one point threaten to jeopardize his basketball career. According to the sources, Curry is eyeing to return to action on Friday against the Atlanta Hawks.

During the six games span without Curry, the Warriors are 2-4. They are also 13-8 this season when he’s not on the floor compared to 40-10 when he is starting. Curry has been averaging 26.3 points, 6.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game in the 2017-18 season.

Besides Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors currently have Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson on the injury list. According to the reports, Durant (ribs injury) and Thompson (hand injury) won’t be returning to the starting line-up anytime soon.

Warrior’s fourth All-Star, forward Draymond Green, also suffered a pelvic contusion injury in the second quarter of Monday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Still, it looks like Green won’t miss out any time.

It’ll be fine” – he said after the game. “I think it’s just kind of something that’s kind of at the peak right now, but it’s calmed down a little bit since it happened. So, it’s not that serious.

Asked whether he thinks he will miss games because of the injury, Green responded: “I don’t think so, but I don’t know. I’ll just go day by day and see if it improves over the next couple of days. But I don’t think so.
