The Detroit Lions have made a move to shore up their receiving core, inking five-year NFL veteran and former Green Bay Packer Geronimo Allison to a one-year deal worth $910,000. He will also receive a $137,500 signing bonus as part of his new deal.

Allison makes the move to a former NFC North rival after spending the rest of his career with the Green Bay Packers. After going undrafted out of the University of Illinois, Allison worked his way into the Packers’ receiving corps as a valuable backup.

He did, however, fail to live up to expectations after being given an increased role in the 2019 season. Despite moving up in the team’s depth chart, Allison caught only 34 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns last season, never establishing a rhythm with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Florida native caught a total of 89 passes for 1,045 yards and 6 touchdowns during his four-year tenure in Green Bay.

Now, Allison will have the opportunity to try his luck with a new team and serve as a crucial member of the team’s pass-catching corps. He is expected to join Danny Amendola, Kenny Golladay, and Marvin Jones Jr. as a key member of the team’s unproven group of wideouts.

Packers placed Allison on injured reserve list on Tuesday, meaning that the 24-year-old will be eligible to play only if the team reaches the playoffs. He made 20 catches for 303 yards and two touchdowns in five games he played this season.

According to ESPN, Geronimo Allison suffered a groin injury in practice last week and will need to undergo a surgery in order to repair it.

Green Bay is still to fill Allison’s roster spot, but it is believed that the team will reactivate Trevor Davis or Jake Kumerow, both of which are eligible to return from the injured reserve list.

This wasn’t the only roster move Green Bay Packers made since the team also decided to release safety Jermaine Whitehead. This comes after Whitehead slapped New England Patriots’ center David Andrews on Sunday and got ejected from the game for his actions. He will be replaced by cornerback Will Redmond, who was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad.

Whitehead joined Packers in 2016 after stints with San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. He recorded 20 tackles and 1.0 sacks in 2018.
