Six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is retiring from professional football. McCoy decided to end his career after spending 11 seasons in the NFL.

McCoy, who played his last game in 2021, made the announcement earlier this week via a video posted on Twitter.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where McCoy played for nine years, extended their official congratulations shortly after the announcement.

McCoy entered the league as the Bucs’ third overall pick in 2010. While in Tampa, he made six consecutive Pro Bowls between 2012 and 2017 while also earning three All-Pro nods. The Oklahoma product left the Buccaneers in 2018 to join the Carolina Panthers.

After a productive campaign with the Panthers in 2019, McCoy spent the following two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and the Las Vegas Raiders. However, a series of injuries prevented him from suiting up for the Cowboys and limited him to just one game with the Raiders.

McCoy walks away with a total of 334 tackles, 59.5 sacks, 153 QB hits, and six forced fumbles over the course of his NFL career. His 54.5 sacks as a Buccaneer rank third in franchise history, just behind Hall of Famer Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice.

The Las Vegas Raiders will have to manage without veteran defensive tackle Gerald McCoy moving forward in 2021. The six-time Pro Bowler suffered a knee injury in the Raiders’ wild win over Baltimore Ravens on Monday and will miss the remainder of the season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

McCoy spent only nine snaps on the field before getting hurt. He previously missed the entire 2020 after rupturing his right quadriceps during the training camp.

The Raiders did not disclose details of McCoy’s injury, only announcing that the 33-year-old player landed on the injured list. In a corresponding move, the team brought in Damion Square, signing the veteran off the Chicago Bears practice squad.

Square spent the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, playing all 16 games and making one start. He finished the season with 20 tackles, one sack, and two QB hits.

McCoy’s injury wasn’t the end of bad news for the Raiders as they also lost starting right guard Denzelle Good during the Ravens game. The franchise confirmed that Good has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. He will be replaced by Jordan Simmons, whose most recent stint was with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Dallas Cowboys received some disappointing news on Monday. According to multiple reports, one of the team’s biggest offseason acquisitions, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, suffered quadriceps injury and is set to have season-ending surgery.

McCoy got injured while performing individual drills during Monday’s practice. After being unable to put weight on his right leg, the 32-year-old defensive tackle underwent an MRI, which unfortunately revealed a quadriceps tendon tear.

Jones told reporters that McCoy intends to rejoin Cowboys after the surgery, and try to help the team from the sidelines. The player himself later confirmed this via text sent to ESPN’s Ed Werder.

“I will remain the mentor I am to the young guys and do my part to make sure that this team goes where it needs to,” McCoy told Werder. “As far as my mindset people deal with real-life problems every day especially now with the state of our country.”

Gerald McCoy joined Dallas Cowboys on a three-year, $18 million deal in the offseason and was supposed to be a key piece in the team’s reworked defense. With McCoy out now, Dallas will have to get to the drawing board once again and explore their options. Rookie Neville Gallimore and 2019’s second-round pick Trysten Hill are currently poised to step in from McCoy.

McCoy spent the majority of his career with Tampa Bay Buccaneers, making six Pro Bowls and three First-Team All-Pro selections between 2010 and 2018. His stats include 334 tackles, 59.5 sacks, and 23 pass deflections.

After a weeks-long tour across NFL, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy finally made a decision about his next team.  McCoy decided to join Carolina Panther, with whom he signed a one year deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCoy’s contract with Carolina is worth up to $10.25 million and includes $4 million signing bonus.

Panthers announced their newest acquisition via social media.

“It’s great to have Gerald on our side now,” – said Panthers’ general manager Marty Hurney in a statement. “We are very familiar with his skill set after facing him over the years and know that he not only brings a wealth of talent as a player but is also a tremendous person. We are extremely happy to have Gerald as a part of the Panthers organization.”

Gerald McCoy visited several other NFL teams after being released by Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in May and ended up shortlisting his options to Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns. He ended up deciding to join the Panthers as he thought that they are a “true contender.”

“The reason I’m here is because I was quoted as saying I wanted to go to a contender and every ounce of me feels like this team is a true contender,” – McCoy told reporters after inking the deal. “The NFC South champs are the New Orleans Saints, and they’re known to have a great offense, and in order to take them out, you got to have a great defense. The Carolina Panthers have been known to have a great defense, and I just want to add to that, and I truly believe that, with the addition of me and all the pieces that are already here, we got a great shot.”

McCoy will definitely be a big addition for Panther’s defense and is expected to give a new dimension to the team’s pass rush. His NFL career stats include 297 tackles, 53.5 sacks, and 21 pass deflections.
