The Georgia Bulldogs got a big win on the road against Auburn on Saturday, and were rewarded for their efforts with a jump in the polls for the College Football Playoff on Sunday.

Georgia, which found itself ranked 5th heading into the weekend behind Alabama, took advantage of a convincing win over the 12th-ranked Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium in order to move forward into the playoff spots in the poll.

In the College Football Playoff System, implemented for the 2015 season, the top four teams qualify for a playoff to decide the season’s champion.

Alabama found itself punished despite a comfortable 38-7 road win over Mississippi State, dropping from 5th to 4th and provisionally out of the playoffs.

This wasn’t the only bad news of the weekend for the Crimson Tide, however. Star quarterback Tua Tagovaiola suffered a season-ending hip injury in his team’s Saturday win, meaning that the Tide will have to turn to backup quarterback Mac Jones for the rest of the year.

Many have guessed that Tagovaiola’s injury influenced Alabama’s drop in the rankings heading into the penultimate weekend of the regular season.

Georgia will host #24 Texas A&M on Saturday, while Alabama will take on Western Carolina at home.

The Georgia Bulldogs’ pursuit of perfection came to a screeching end on Saturday after they were stunned at home by the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The two-time reigning SEC East Champions couldn’t get the job done against the unranked and unheralded Gamecocks on Saturday in a noon game that they never seemed fully into.

Georgia went into the game with a perfect 5-0 record and as 25-point favorites against a 2-3 South Carolina team that wasn’t expected to be competitive.

However, in college football, nothing is a given.

Carolina benefited from four Georgia turnovers, all of which were committed by Georgia QB Jake Fromm (3 interceptions, 1 fumble). They held the Bulldogs’ high-flying attack to only 17 points, their lowest total of the year.

The biggest play of regulation was arguably Israel Mukuamu’s interception return for a touchdown that put Carolina up 17-10 just before halftime.

Despite being outgained 468-297 by the Dawgs, the Gamecocks found themselves deadlocked at the end of regulation after a late Fromm TD pass which tied the game.

After a Parker White chip shot field goal gave Carolina a 20-17 lead in overtime, they forced Georgia to attempt a 42-yard field goal after holding them without a gain in their offensive possession.

Rodrigo Blankenship missed the kick, putting Georgia’s season and National Championship aspirations in serious trouble.

After Georgia Bulldogs went 18-15 for the season and failed to reach any postseason competition, Mark Fox was fired as a head coach of the basketball program at the University of Georgia on 10 March. It took less than a week for Georgia to find his replacement, as they brought in former Marquette and Indiana coach Tom Crean. According to the reports, Crean signed a six-year deal. He was officially introduced on Thursday.

Tom Crean is one of the most successful coaches in college basketball over the past two decades,” – said Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity in a statement. “His teams have consistently been participants in postseason play, and his players have been extremely successful in the classroom. He’s going to be a great fit for the University of Georgia. I’m extremely excited to have him leading Georgia Basketball into the future and to welcome his family into the Bulldog Nation.

After serving as assistant coach at Western Kentucky, Pittsburgh, and Michigan State, Tom Crean got his first head coaching job with Marquette Golden Eagles. He spent nine years at Marquette University, making five NCAA Tournament appearances including one NCAA Final Four appearance. He developed several high-profile basketball players including Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade.

Crean then took the job with the Indiana Hoosiers in 2008 and held the position until 2017. During that time, he had four NCAA Tournament appearances and posted a 166–135 record. He was fired in March 2017 by Indiana and worked as ESPN’s analyst before taking the job with the Georgia Bulldogs.

I am honored an humbled to join the University of Georgia family,” – said Crean. “I am sincerely grateful to President Morehead and Greg McGarity for an incredible opportunity. Make no mistake, this is a basketball program inside of a great university that can compete for championships doing it the right way.
