Veteran quarterback Geno Smith will parlay his career year in 2022 into a big payday from the Seattle Seahawks. According to The Score’s Jordan Schultz, Smith, and the Seahawks have reached an agreement on a three-year, $105 million contract.

Smith, who was set to become a free agent this offseason, will reportedly get as much as $52 million in 2023.

After serving as a backup for the better part of his pro career, Smith received a chance to start for the Seahawks after the franchise traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos ahead of the 2022 campaign. The 32-year-old player used the most out of this opportunity, leading the league in completion percentage with 69.8 while throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 picks. He was named Pro Bowl and NFL Comeback Player of the Year at the end of the season.

Geno Smith re-signing with the Seahawks always seemed like a foregone conclusion considering how comfortable he looks in Pete Carroll’s system. The franchise, on the other hand, didn’t want to lose the player they had tons of respect for and who gave them a great chance to compete.

The Seahawks will now have to figure out who to have as Smith’s backup next season. Former second-round pick Drew Lock served in that role in 2022, but he is set to become a free agent. Seattle may try to resign him or instead get one of the rookie QBs with the No. 5 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Veteran signal-caller Geno Smith will get to wear the Seattle Seahawks’ jersey in 2020 as well. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Smith, who became a free agent in March, agreed to a new one-year deal with Seahawks.

Smith spent 2019 as Seahawks’ backup QB, but didn’t make an official game appearance as starter Russell Wilson played every snap last season. Still, Seattle appreciated the 29-year-old’s professionalism and viewed him as a reliable addition to the QB room.

Smith, however, doesn’t have the backup role in the bag just yet. He will have to compete with Anthony Gordon, an undrafted rookie out of Washington State.

Geno Smith entered the NFL in 2013 as New York Jets’ second-round pick. He spent his first two seasons in New York as a starter, throwing for 5,571 yards and 25 touchdowns in 30 games. However, Smith also threw 34 interceptions during that period, which caused the Jets to demote him to a backup role.

Smith also had stints with New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers before joining Seahawks in 2019.
