Veteran signal-caller Geno Smith will get to wear the Seattle Seahawks’ jersey in 2020 as well. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Smith, who became a free agent in March, agreed to a new one-year deal with Seahawks.

Smith spent 2019 as Seahawks’ backup QB, but didn’t make an official game appearance as starter Russell Wilson played every snap last season. Still, Seattle appreciated the 29-year-old’s professionalism and viewed him as a reliable addition to the QB room.

Smith, however, doesn’t have the backup role in the bag just yet. He will have to compete with Anthony Gordon, an undrafted rookie out of Washington State.

Geno Smith entered the NFL in 2013 as New York Jets’ second-round pick. He spent his first two seasons in New York as a starter, throwing for 5,571 yards and 25 touchdowns in 30 games. However, Smith also threw 34 interceptions during that period, which caused the Jets to demote him to a backup role.

Smith also had stints with New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers before joining Seahawks in 2019.

Geno Smith, the man who snapped Eli Manning’s 210-game starting streak with the New York Giants, has a new job. According to ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan, Smith will sign a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks in the coming days.

Ranaan reports that Smith will receive a chance to compete for the role of Russell Wilson’s backup. His main competition for the job will be former Denver Broncos first-round pick Paxton Lynch, who was brought in back in January.

Besides Lynch, Seattle Seahawks also had undrafted free agent Taryn Christion under contract but released him on Monday in order to make room for Smith. Seattle also tried out QBs Troy Williams and Michael O’Connor but was not impressed with their overall performance during the rookie minicamp.

Geno Smith started his NFL career with the New York Jets as a second-round pick in 2013. He was a starter for the Jets for two years but was relegated to a backup role in 2015. Smith signed with the Giants in 2017 and was named a starter in Week 12, becoming the first player to start besides Manning for the team since 2004. He ended the game with 212 passing yards and a touchdown, while having two forced fumbles, and was demoted to the backup role the next week.

Smith spent 2018 with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he appeared in five games as a relief to Philip Rivers. He passed for eight yards and rushed for two more during those games.

The man who ended Eli Manning’s streak of consecutive starts in the NFL has found himself a new team. According to the reports, former New York Giants’ quarterback Geno Smith has agreed to a one year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. It is expected that Smith will serve as a backup to Charger’s starting QB Philip Rivers.

Geno Smith signed a one year, $2 million deal with the New York Giants before the 2017 NFL season, and earned himself a spot as team’s backup QB. Giants’ coach Ben McAdoo decided to start Smith in Week 13 against the Oakland Raiders, which meant Manning’s streak of 222 consecutive starts ended. Although Smith performed above expectations, ending the game with 212 passing yards and a touchdown, he returned to the bench in Week 14 in favor of Manning after McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese were fired.

Geno Smith was drafted in the NFL by the New York Jets, who spent a second-round pick in the 2013 draft to get him. After Jets’ starting QB Mark Sanchez suffered an injury, Smith was named the team’s starting QB in his rookie season. He finished the season with 8-8 record, passing for 3,046 yards and 12 touchdowns while having 21 interceptions. He also rushed for 366 yards and had 6 rushing touchdowns.

After a mediocre second season, Jets benched Smith and he proceeded on to appear in 5 games in the last three seasons.
