Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya is threatening that Canelo Alvarez will not fight against GGG on September 15th.

De La Hoya has suggested that the Mexican could end up fighting against Spike O’Sullivan rather than Golovkin.

A fight against O’Sullivan would likely struggle to sell more than 250,000 views and should be an easy win for Canelo. On the other hand, a fight between Canelo and GGG would easily attract more than 1.5 million viewers due to the fact that both fighters are considered to be the best of this generation.

Last September, the two fighters fought to a controversial draw which sold 1.3 million buyouts. The two were meant to have a rematch on May 5th, however, Canelo had to pull out after he tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol.

The fight was supposed to be split 65-35 in Canelo’s favor.

Golovkin should not be accepting anything less than 50-50. He is a respected fighter and Canelo was the reason why the first fight did not go ahead so he should be the person who makes a sacrifice.

We won’t see Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin rematch, at least not on May 5. Alvarez announced on Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the rematch due to a possible extension of his suspension by Nevada State Athletic Commission. Canelo Alvarez was temporary suspended for testing positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol on two occasions, while the final decision about the suspension will be made on April 18 at a hearing scheduled in Las Vegas.

The first match between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin took place in September 2017, ending in a controversial draw, with many people thinking that Golovkin deserved a win.

We’re going to have to cancel the May 5 rematch,” – Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez said at a press conference. “As you all know there is a hearing on April 18 and it’s extremely unlikely this will get properly resolved by then and we need enough time to promote this fight.”

It is expected that Canelo Alvarez will receive a one-year suspension since this is his first offense. Golden Boy Promotions hope that the suspension might be reduced to six months after an appeal, which would clear Alvarez for the rematch that would then take place in August or September.

I am truly shocked about what has happened and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity, I have always been and always will be clean fighter,” – said Alvarez in a statement. “I want to apologize to HBO, Tecate and Hennessy and all my other sponsors, the media and to everyone who is involved in the promotion of this event, and especially to the fans. I respect this sport. I will always be a clean fighter.
