Columbus Crew’s latest roster move might not sit well with their fans. The team announced on Wednesday that they have dealt Argentinian defender Gaston Sauro to Liga MX side for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Sauro was a standard member of Columbus’ starting lineup this season, making 19 MLS appearances and scoring two goals. Still, the 29-year-old was set to become a free agent at the end of 2019, which is why Crew probably didn’t want to risk losing him.

“We would like to thank Gaston for his professionalism and commitment to Columbus Crew SC during his time with the club,” – said Crew SC president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “Gaston was an inspiration to his teammates with his perseverance in overcoming an injury to play soccer again. We want to wish him all the best in this next stage of his career.”

Gaston Sauro spent the early part of his career in native Argentina and Europe, before joining Columbus Crew in 2015. Although he was regarded as one of the team’s best options on defense, Sauro struggled to stay healthy for the most part of his time with the team. During the period of three and a half years, he only managed to play 45 matches.
