Welsh star forward Gareth Bale has a new club. Sort of.

Bale re-joined Tottenham Hotspur, with whom he previously played between 2007 and 2013, arriving on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

The Premier League side confirmed the move on social media over the weekend.

Bale was previously deemed surplus at Santiago Bernabeu after playing just 16 games last season. The 31-year-old forward was linked with several different teams, but Tottenham was the fastest and secured themselves a marquee signing in what has been a lukewarm transfer window for the London club so far.

“It’s just incredible to be back, and hopefully now I can get some match fitness and get under way and really help the team, and hopefully win trophies,” said Bale. “I always thought when I did leave that one day I would love to come back. The opportunity now has arisen, and I feel like it’s a good fit.”

According to reports, Tottenham will pay around 40 percent of Bale’s $771,000 weekly salary as part of the deal while Real Madrid will take care of the rest.

Gareth Bale became one of the world’s best players during his first stint with Tottenham, making 203 appearances for the club and being selected as Premier League’s best player two times. He left London in the summer of 2013 to join Real in a record $120 million transfer.

Bale won a number of trophies in Spain, including two La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues, while being one of Real’s key players in most of these feats. However, he fell out of favor with manager Zinedine Zidane in the past couple of seasons, which ultimately led to his departure.

La Liga champions Real Madrid are so desperate to see Gareth Bale leave that they are ready to take a significant financial hit in order to make that happen. According to Spanish media outlet Cadena Ser, Real is willing to pay half of Gareth Bale’s salary if he joins a new club.

Bale is considered out of favor at Santiago Bernabeu for some time now, and both the player and Real want to go their separate ways. The issue is that the 34-year-old forward’s massive $17.75 million salary that turned away potential suitors.

Initially, Real considered releasing Bale outright, but such a move would come at a huge cost considering the Welsh forward has two years left on his deal. So, the Spanish club is now looking into the scenario in which they would let him go for free and finance half of his salary earnings to facilitate a move.

Gareth Bale’s next destination is probably the Premier League, where Manchester United and his old club Tottenham Hotspur are interested in his services. However, if these latest reports turn out to be true, expect that Bale quickly attracts suitors from all across Europe.

While Bale was mostly successful during his seven-year stint with Real, he struggled to make a big impact for the club in the past two seasons. This is especially the case for the 2019/20 season when he played just 16 games in La Liga and only scored twice.

Real Madrid’s star winger Gareth Bale has been linked with returning to England’s Premier League for some time now, but it looks like the 29-year-old is not keen on moving from Spain just yet. According to Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett, his client is “very happy” at Real.

“He’s very happy here. He’s a Real Madrid player,” – Barnett told Deportes Cuatro. “Right now, he’s not thinking about going back to England.”

“I can’t predict the future. But, for now, he’s very happy,” – he added.

Although he was supposed to take C. Ronaldo’s place as the club’s main star, Bale struggled this season and managed to score only 14 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions. This fueled the rumors that he was becoming increasingly disillusioned with life in Spain and could return to England where Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in his favors.

Gareth Bale joined Real Madrid in 2013 from Tottenham in a transfer worth a then-record $110 million. During his time in Madrid, Bale won 14 trophies including one La Liga and four UEFA Champions League titles. He played a total of 227 games in all competitions and scored 102 goals.
