With yet another loss on Sunday paired with a New York Jets win, the Jacksonville Jaguars have officially secured the first pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

This means that the Jaguars will almost certainly be drafting Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who many experts see as the best quarterback prospect of the decade.

The Jaguars won their first game of the 2020 season and haven’t won one since. The early favorites to secure the pick were the Jets, who lost their first 13 games but have now won two straight games, defeating the Cleveland Browns 23-16 this Sunday.

If the Jaguars win their last game and the Jets lose theirs, both teams will finish the season with a 2-14 record. However, the Jaguars will own the strength-of-schedule tie-breaker, which is why it is now certain that they are officially owners of the first pick.

This will be the first time in the 26-year history of the franchise that Jacksonville will have the first pick in the draft. If the Jaguars lose in Week 17, they will also secure their worst record in franchise history. The Jaguars finished 2-14 in 2012.

The consensus No. 1 pick, Trevor Lawrence, is a true junior who has yet to officially declare for the NFL Draft.

However, most expect Lawrence to skip his final year at Clemson to join the NFL. In three years at Clemson, Lawrence has thrown for 88 touchdowns and only 16 interceptions. He is also a front runner to win the Heisman trophy this year.

The Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t sure which quarterback they are going to start with in their next game.

Reports from the team claim that current starter Gardner Minshew is dealing with a fairly serious injury of the thumb on his throwing hand and that he might not be able to play in the team’s next matchup against the Houston Texans.

Minshew reportedly has both a strained ligament and multiple fractures in his right thumb. The Jaguars have a bye week coming up, but the team isn’t certain that Minshew’s thumb will be able to heal up by Week 9 either.

The second-year quarterback has reportedly been dealing with the injury for several weeks, and it was clear in the Jaguars’ last two games against the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers that Minshew’s accuracy was a bit off.

The Jaguars’ second-string option is Mike Glennon, a career backup quarterback who is already on his fifth team.

Minshew obviously wants to keep playing since the 2020 season is basically his audition to keep the starting job, considering the fact that the Jaguars are probably going to have a top pick in next year’s draft and will spend it on a quarterback if they don’t think Minshew is the long-term answer.

Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach Doug Marrone announced on Tuesday that the Nick Foles will be the team’s starting quarterback moving forward, with rookie Gardner Minshew assuming the backup role.

Foles suffered a broken collarbone in Week 1 and landed on the injured reserve, which opened the opportunity for Minshew to start in the past eight weeks. Minshew put a nice run during that period, leading the team to 4-4 record, but that wasn’t enough for him to remain a starter once Foles recovered.

“I made a decision on the quarterbacks, and Nick will be our starting quarterback going forward,” – Marrone told reporters. “Obviously [it’s] my decision. I worked hard on it, came to it.”

According to Marrone, the team’s offense was suited to Foles in the offseason he believes that the Jags have a better chance of having success with him. 

“Looking back at all the work we put in and I just go back to the experience of what he’s going to be able to do,” – he added. “I think that’s going to give us the ability, a better chance of winning right now.”

After leading Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl win in 2017 and Divisional playoffs in 2018, Nick Foles signed a four-year, $88 million contract with the Jaguars in March.

In his first start for Jacksonville in Week 1, Foles completed 5 of 8 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown before exiting the game with an injury. His next game will be against Indianapolis Colts in Week 11.
