The underperforming San Francisco Giants didn’t wait for the end of the 2023 MLB season to start making big changes. The team announced on Friday that they have fired manager Gabe Kapler, ending his four-year tenure with the organization.

Kapler is out after the Giants missed out on the postseason for the second consecutive year. The San Francisco team is currently 78-82 and sits 4th in the NL West despite only being 1 ½ games behind the leading Los Angeles Dodgers in July.

The decision to fire Kepler caught some people off guard, considering that the Giants are known for being patient with their managers. Also, Kepler is just two years removed from leading them to a franchise-record 107 regular season wins.

“On behalf of the Giants organization, we wish Gabe the best of luck in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions over the last four years,” said the president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi.

It is obvious that the Giants’ front office doesn’t believe Kepler can lead them to repeated success. It is unclear which path the team will take next, with Bob Melvin being the favorite to replace Kepler if the San Diego Padres fire him.

Kepler will leave having compiled a 295- 248 record with the Giants and winning the Manager of the Year award in 2021. 

“It is a disappointment to say goodbye,” Kapler wrote on Instagram. “… I felt like I had the chance to help people grow, and people helped me to grow, and I am grateful for the opportunity. We didn’t win enough to satisfy me or our fans.”

After weeks of rumor and speculation, the San Francisco Giants finally made it official on Tuesday: former Phillies manager Gabe Kapler has been named the new man at the helm of the NL West franchise.

Kapler, who failed to guide Philadelphia to a playoff appearance in his two years in charge in the City of Brotherly Love, will be given the tough task of replacing beloved former Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who retired after the conclusion of this season.

Bochy managed San Francisco for 13 seasons, winning 3 World Series titles.

It comes as no surprise that the Giants would pick Kapler as their new manager considering his close relationship with President of Baseball Operations Zarhan Zaidi. The two worked together closely prior to the 2017 season as members of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

Kapler will have a three-year contract to prove that he is the right man for the job. Questions will undoubtedly hang over his head until he proves that he can be successful after two seasons without a winning record with the Phillies, including a disappointing 2018 campaign that saw the team fall short of its goals.

It’s the beginning of a new era for the Giants, and Zaidi will hope that his choice proves to be a stroke of genius.

While most MLB teams have rushed to fill their managerial vacancies, San Francisco Giants are taking their time with finding a replacement for retired Bruce Bochy. However, the name of the new Giants’ manager should be revealed soon as the organization narrowed down their search to three finalists.

ESPN reports that Giants will pick between Philadelphia Phillies’ manager Gabe Kepler, Houston Astros’ bench coach Joe Espada, and Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach Matt Quatraro to lead the team in 2020 MLB season.

Kepler is the only name among the three to have experience in managing an MLB team. The 44-year-old served as Phillies’ manager in the previous two seasons, posting a 161–163 record before being fired.

Espada, on the other hand, has served with Miami Marlins and New York Yankees on various positions before coming to Houston. He also coached the Puerto Rican national baseball team on several occasions.

Finally, Quatraro coached with Cleveland Indians as an assistant hitting coach while serving as a third base coach and bench coach with Rays. He managed several minor league baseball teams in the past.

Reportedly, San Francisco’s president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi also considered hiring Bochy’s successor within the organization, interviewing Giants’ third base coach Ron Wotus and bench coach Hensley Meulens. Oakland Athletics’ quality control coach Mark Kotsay and LA Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren also received consideration.
