It is no secret that La Liga powerhouse Barcelona is having serious financial struggles. But despite this, the Catalan club isn’t willing to cash in on their best players.

Speaking on Saturday during a general assembly, club’s president Joan Laporta revealed that Barca rejected an offer of €100 million for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

“We cannot improve sportingly if we do not do our homework economically,” Laporta said during his speech. “We have had the opportunity to sell Frenkie de Jong for €100 million, and we did not want to do it so as not to lose our ability to be competitive.”

It is unclear which club sent in the offer, but de Jong has had plenty of suitors in the past who would be willing to make such a hefty bid. He was the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia clubs, while Premier League’s Chelsea and Manchester United also have the 26-year-old on their radar. Man United reportedly even had a bid of €85 million accepted by Barca at one point, but the player wasn’t interested in leaving Spain.

Frenkie de Jong became a key player for Barcelona since arriving at Camp Nou in 2019 in a €75 million transfer from Ajax. He played a total of 190 games for the club and helped them win the La Liga title in 2022–23.

Manchester United’s new boss Erik ten Hag is already facing some major obstacles in his attempts to help the club return to its former glory. Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, believed to be at the top of ten Hag’s wish list this summer, recently made it clear that he is only interested in staying with his current club Barcelona.

Ten Hag worked with de Jong at Ajax and believes the 25-year-old player would be a perfect fit for what he’s trying to do at Old Trafford. Barca is reportedly also willing to do business due to their troubled financial situation, but the Netherlands international doesn’t seem to be convinced about the move at all. 

Speaking with Pascal Kamperman of ESPN Netherlands on Tuesday, de Jong reflected on Man Utd transfer rumors and reiterated his desire to continue playing in Barca’s uniform.

“I prefer to stay with Barcelona,” De Jong said. “Barcelona is just my dream club. Also, from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.”

De Jong later also had a chat with Dutch media outlet AD and conveyed a similar message.

“Of course, I hear about the links to Manchester United, but the people in charge of Barça didn’t tell me anything,” he explained.

Frenkie De Jong joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 in a transfer worth €75 million. But while De Jong established himself as ever-present in the club’s starting 11, he failed to make the expected impact. He only has 13 goals and 17 assists to show for in the past three seasons.

Injuries continue to be a problem for Barcelona even after the 2019/20 La Liga season resumed. The club confirmed on Sunday that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is currently dealing with a muscle injury and will be out indefinitely.

De Jong missed Barca’s two previous games, against Leganes and Sevilla, with the club previously stating that he’s dealing with an unspecified injury. The Catalan giant now shared further details, saying that the 23-year-old midfielder went through further tests over the weekend that shows issues in his right calf.

According to the club, there is no timeline for De Jong’s return to action at the moment.

“The clinical follow-up on Frenkie De Jong has uncovered an injury in the soleus of his right leg,” said Barca in a statement. “The evolution of the injury will condition the player’s availability.”

After joining Barcelona from Ajax last July, Frenkie de Jong quickly became indispensable for the Spanish club. He played 38 appearances in all competitions in the 2019/20 season and contributed with two goals and two assists.

De Jong’s absence comes at a critical moment for Barcelona as the club attempts to win their third straight La Liga title. Barca is currently sitting at No.2 on the standings with the same number of points as first-placed Real Madrid. There are eight games left in the season.
