The Carolina Panthers announced on Monday that they have fired their head coach Frank Reich. The move ends Reich’s stint with the franchise after only 11 games.

The Panthers announced the news with a statement from owner David Tepper, who thanked Reich for “his dedication and service”. Tepper said that special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will take over as a head coach on an interim basis.

Reich is out after the Panthers suffered a 17-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The loss dropped them to 1-10, the worst record in the league.

The Panthers hired Reich in January and later traded up in the 2023 NFL Draft to take Alabama’s quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall pick. The expectation was that Reich, given his reputation as an offensive guru, was an ideal candidate to develop Young and turn him into a franchise signal-caller.

However, the Panthers never managed to get their offense going this season, with Reich even giving up playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown at one point. Young, on the other hand, didn’t do much to help the cause, completing 61.7% of his passes and throwing for 1,877 yards, nine touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

The Panthers are reportedly expected to pursue an offensive-minded head coach once again. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is considered to be the favorite for the job, having interviewed with the team before Tepper opted for Reich.

After Josh McDaniels turned down the opportunity to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in favor of staying with the New England Patriots, the Colts moved swiftly and got former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich to take the job. According to reports, Reich will receive a five-year contract. This time, there won’t be backing down, since the Colts made the announcement after Frank Reich signed the contract.

We are extremely excited to announce Frank Reich as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts,” – said Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay said in a statement. “Frank has all the ingredients of a successful head coach: intelligence, innovation, character, organizational and leadership skills and a commanding presence. He also has a stellar reputation, and his myriad of life experiences and the people he has worked with make him the perfect fit for us and our fans. I feel extremely fortunate and could not be more excited for Colts Nation and the future of our franchise.

Indianapolis Colts were the first of six teams to fire their coach at the end of the regular season, but the last one to actually sign one. Team’s search for Chuck Pagano’s successor had its ups and downs, with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels agreed to the job mid-January. The Colts already announced the hiring of McDaniels and arranged a press conference. The day before the press conference, however, McDaniels informed the Colts that he will be staying with the Patriots. All the previous candidates, besides McDaniels, already took jobs elsewhere, so the team had to start all over again. They interviewed the New Orleans Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell and Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, but Frank Reich ended up getting the job.

Highlights of Reich’s career include serving as quarterbacks coach for Peyton Manning in 2009 and 2010, as well as being OC and QB coach with the San Diego Chargers.
