The San Diego Padres’ star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is getting closer to making his debut in 2022. Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Tatis confirmed that he received some positive news about his recovery from wrist surgery and that he will be able to swing a bat in the next two weeks.

“This was the first time I came out happy after a doctor’s appointment,” Tatis said.

The X-rays on Tatis’ wrist showed that the injury is healing nicely, clearing the way for the 23-year-old to start making plans about his return to action. After he starts batting, Tatis won’t be able to take a swing at pitches from the pitching machine for another 10 days. When he clears that hurdle, he should get a minor league assignment to ramp up his condition for the MLB.

“I’ve been playing this game since I was a kid, since I have memory. So it’s more about getting my body in [baseball] shape,” Tatis added.

Tatis fractured his wrist during the offseason and had to undergo surgery in early March. The Padres didn’t detail the injury, but the reports say that the 2021’s NL home run leader got hurt in a motorcycle accident.

Tatis was one of the best players in baseball last season, earning All-Star and All-MLB honors. He finished the campaign with a .282 batting average, 42 homers, and 97 RBIs.

The San Diego Padres will have to wait a bit longer before seeing their star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. on the field again. This was confirmed by the team’s general manager A.J. Preller on Tuesday.

Tatis has been out since March, when he underwent wrist surgery to repair an injury he suffered during the offseason. The Padres were optimistic that the 23-year-old could return at some point in June, but a recent CT didn’t show enough healing for that to happen.

According to Preller, Tatis is “not quite at the level” required for swinging a bat and didn’t recover enough to get “a full green light.” It is unclear at the moment when the 2021’s NL home run leader will have his next evaluation.

Fernando Tatis Jr. emerged as one of the biggest young stars in baseball in recent years. He made the All-MLB First Team in the past two years while becoming an All-Star in 2021. Tatis wrapped up the last season batting .282 with 42 homers and 97 RBIs.

Tatis’ absence didn’t prove to be a significant handicap for the Padres as many initially believed. Instead, the team managed to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the battle for NL West supremacy and currently owns a 39-24 record.

After shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. put the league on notice last season, the San Diego Padres knew they had the baseball’s “next big thing” on their hands. This is why they didn’t flinch when the time came to give the 22-year-old star a new contract.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Padres signed Tatis to a 14-year deal that is worth $350 million. Reportedly, the player will also receive a $10 million signing bonus and a no-trade clause as part of the agreement.

The Padres are expected to make the news official at some point this week.

Tatis’s contract is now the third-biggest deal in baseball history. The only two players that received bigger deals are the LA Angels’ Mike Trout and the LA Dodgers’ Mookie Betts. Trout signed a $426.5 million deal in 2019, while Betts inked a $392 million contract in 2020.

The San Diego Padres landed Fernando Tatis Jr. in 2016 in a trade that saw them send pitcher James Shields to the Chicago White Sox. Tatis quickly made his way through the minors and emerged as one of the best prospects in baseball.

Tatis received his MLB debut during the 2019 MLB season, showing promise and ending the campaign with a .317 batting average, 22 home runs, and 61 runs. The 2020 season, however, was his breakthrough year as he established himself as the star of the franchise thanks to his eye-catching shortstop play and ability at the plate.

In a shortened 2020 MLB season, Tatis had 62 hits with a .277 batting average while delivering 17 homers and 45 RBIs. He finished fourth in the NL MVP voting and ended the year with All-MLB First Team selection and Silver Slugger Award.

This was enough for the Padres to make a big commitment to Tatis and make him a part of their long-term future as they chase the Dodgers in the race for National League supremacy.
