The Dallas Cowboys are turning to one of the former franchise stars to bolster depth in the running back position. According to multiple reports, the Cowboys will reunite with Ezekiel Elliott, who agreed to a one-year deal with the franchise over the weekend.

Reportedly, Elliott’s deal with the Cowboys will max out at $3 million and will become official once the veteran passes his physical.

Elliott returning to the Cowboys doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that the franchise’s executive vice president, Stephen Jones, previously hinted that the team is looking into a reunion.

“Well, Zeke, as we all know, is one of our favorites,” said Jones last week. “He’s laid it on the line for this franchise. He’s the ultimate competitor. I mean, he’s a guy that we obviously think a lot of.”

Ezekiel Elliott entered the league as the Cowboys’ fourth overall selection in 2016 and quickly established himself as one of the best backs in the league. He received a First-Team All-Pro selection in his rookie year after rushing for a league-leading 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns while making the Pro Bowl three times in his first four years in the league.

However, Elliott’s productivity dipped in the following seasons as he struggled to be a force in the backfield as he once was. This, alongside his big contract, prompted the Cowboys to release him at the end of the 2022 campaign. Elliott spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots, rushing for 642 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games, including five starts.

The Dallas Cowboys are moving from former franchise star running back Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys made the news official on Wednesday, releasing Elliott after seven years with the team.

The Cowboys commemorated Elliott’s time with the franchise through a series of social media posts and a statement from team owner Jerry Jones.

“Zeke’s impact and influence is seared into the Cowboys franchise in a very special and indelible way,” Jones said in a statement. “…  Zeke defined what a great teammate should be, and anyone that has ever played a team sport would be lucky to have a teammate like Zeke and be much better for it.”

The Cowboys decided to release Elliott for a number of reasons. The most obvious one is his declining play in recent seasons. The former fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft hasn’t been on a Pro Bowl level for years and delivered an underwhelming 2022 campaign that saw him rush for a career-low 876 yards.

The move also provided a significant salary cap relief for the franchise. By designating Elliott as a post-June 1 release, the Cowboys will save around $11 million in salary cap while not being on the hook for the remaining four years on the six-year, $90 million extension he signed back in 2019.

The Cowboys will move forward with a younger and cheaper running back in Tony Pollard, who outperformed Elliott last season. Elliott, on the other hand, will hit a free agent market and will likely have to settle for a one-year deal in an attempt to resurrect his career.

Ezekiel Elliott’s holdout paid off. According to multiple sources around NFL, Pro Bowl running back and Dallas Cowboys agreed to an extension that will make Elliott the highest-paid RB in the league.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the two sides agreed to a six-year extension, which is worth $90 million and comes with $50 million guaranteed. This tops the previous record, held by Los Angeles Rams’ Todd Gurley, who got $45 million guaranteed on his deal.

Elliott’s new deal will see him stay with the franchise through 2026. The 24-year-old has two years on his rookie deal, which pay him $3.853 million and $9.09 million respectively. This brings the total value of his deal at more than $100 million.

Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed the extension on Wednesday morning during an interview with CNBC.

“Zeke has been arguably our best player,” said Jones. “I’m not trying to be unfair to anybody else, but he’s an incremental part to our success. We’re glad to get him booked in. We’re glad to have him on.”

The team also posted a photo of Elliott signing his extension on social media.

Although having two years on his deal, Ezekiel Elliott wanted to get long-term security from Dallas Cowboys this offseason and demanded an extension. In order to force Cowboys’ hand, Elliott missed all of the team’s mandatory activities including the training camp. Although it was rumored that Cowboys might play hardball with the player and were prepared to let him miss regular-season games, two sides managed to come to an agreement before the 2019 NFL season officially kicked off.

Elliott has been one of Cowboys’ best players since being drafted fourth overall in 2016 NFL Draft. Since then he led the league twice in rushing, while earning two Pro Bowl appearances and one All-Pro honor.

It seems like Dallas Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott doesn’t have the intention to terminate his holdout if he doesn’t get paid. According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Elliott’s representatives have told the Cowboys that the 24-year-old Pro Bowler won’t play for the team until he gets a new contract.

Elliott currently has two years left on his rookie deal, which will pay him 3.85 million and $9.09 million in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Despite this, he decided to ask for a new deal contract from the organization, hoping to get the “market-setting” type of money. The issue is, however, that Dallas isn’t willing to go that far.

Dallas Cowboys already paid big money to several players this offseason, and are also in the middle of contract negotiations with wide receiver Amari Cooper and quarterback Dak Prescott, both of whom have only one year left on their deals. This makes it tough for the franchise to pay top dollar to everyone.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill recently reported that Cowboys gave the Cooper, Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott offers that would make them among the top five highest-paid players on their positions. Elliott, however, isn’t pleased with this offer that is close to the four years and $52.5 million that Le’ Veon Bell got from New York Jets. He would prefer something in the ballpark of four years, $60 million that Todd Gurley got from Los Angeles Rams.

However, while Cowboys find themselves in a tough spot after these reports, the team’s owner and general manager Jerry Jones isn’t too worried about the situation.

“Just know that like so many things, it’ll happen. It’ll happen,” – Jones recently told NFL Network. “There literally is no concern on my part at all about any time frame. That’ll happen. The results are too good for them and too good for the Cowboys. Think about it now. The results are too good for them and too good for the Cowboys. That always happens when it’s that good for both of us.”
