One-time All-Star first baseman Eric Hosmer has announced his retirement from professional baseball. Hosmer played 13 years in the MLB, suiting up for the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs.

Hosmer played 31 games with the Cubs in the 2023 season. He batted .234 with two homers and 14 RBIs.

After the announcement, Hosmer was congratulated by the Royals, the franchise with whom he spent the first seven years of his career and won a World Series in 2015.

Following his retirement, Hosmer will focus on his newly launched media company, MoonBall Media. As part of the venture, Hosmer is starting a Diggin’ Deep podcast, which he’ll host alongside former pitcher Peter Moylan.

“What we’re doing is digging deep into how people got started in their baseball careers, how something might have happened during their careers that changed them in a big way, things of that nature. That’s going to be something unique and a lot of fun,” said Hosmer in the podcast’s first episode.

Eric Hosmer retires with career stats that include a .276 batting average, 1,753 hits, 198 home runs, and 893 RBIs. He won four Gold Glove Awards and one Silver Slugger Award and has a gold medal from the 2017 World Baseball Classic on his resume.

One of the most sought after free-agents in this MLB off-season, first baseman Eric Hosmer, has found a landing spot. According to multiple reports, Hosmer agreed to an eight-year deal, $144 million with San Diego Padres. This is the largest deal in the franchise’s history and important step in their rebuilding process. Hosmer will earn $21 million per year in the first five years of the contract, with an opt-out clause after.

This is the first time that Eric Hosmer has been a free agent in his career. In 162 regular season games played for Kansas City Royals in 2017 season, the 28-year-old had a career-high .318 batting average, while tying his home runs best with 25. He finished the season with career-best .385 on-base percentage while adding 94 RBI.

During his seven years with the Royals, Hosmer won the World Series in 2015, and was an All-Star in 2016, winning the All-Star MVP as well. He has four Gold Glove Award (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017) and one Silver Slugger Award won in 2017.

With the addition of Eric Hosmer, San Diego Padres show that they are set on making necessary moves in order to perform better than 71-91 record the team had in 2017. Previously the Padres added shortstop Freddy Galvis from the Philadelphia Phillies and third baseman Chase Headley from the New York Yankees.
