Paris Saint-Germain is set to resume the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League campaign without their all-time record scorer. According to French media outlet RMC Sport, the Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani informed PSG that he doesn’t want to sign a short-term contract extension that would enable him to play in the club’s remaining games in Europe.

Cavani’s contract with PSG is set to expire at the end of the month, and the two sides already agreed to part ways. However, Ligue 1 champions hoped that the 33-year-old will prolong his stay in French capital for few more months after UEFA decided to resume the current Champions League season in August.

This won’t be the case, as Cavani rejected the idea and remains set on leaving Paris as soon as his contract is up. Reportedly, he isn’t alone in this, as Belgian back Thomas Meunier also decided to take the same route. Players like Layvin Kurzawa and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, on the other hand, will ink short time extensions to help the club in upcoming UCL matches.

Edinson Cavani joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2013 from Seria A side Napoli. Since then, he scored 200 goals for the club, which placed him at the top of PSG’s all-time goalscoring list.

Los Angeles Galaxy are not wasting time trying to find a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who announced his departure from the club on Wednesday. According to reports, Galaxy immediately turned their focus to Paris Saint-Germain’s striker Edinson Cavani.

NBC Sports’ Joe Prince-Wright cited a report from Sky Sports Italia, which claims that Galaxy representatives are currently in Paris where they are trying to get Cavani’s signature. Still, they have a tough task ahead of them, as MLS newcomer Inter Miami are also interested in the 32-year-old Uruguayan.

Edinson Cavani struggled with injuries and lack of productivity in France this year, playing just six matches and scoring twice. On the other hand, PSG’s new acquisition Mauro Icardi has been stellar, scoring nine times in nine matches. This is why it’s believed that the team wouldn’t stand in Cavani’s way if he was to leave for MLS.

Galaxy would have to pay a transfer fee to PSG, however, as Cavani is under contract until June of 2020.
